Overview
EN ISO 20877:2011 – Footwear – Test Methods for Whole Shoe – Thermal Insulation is an international standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization). This standard specifies a test method for assessing the thermal insulation properties of entire footwear products, such as closed shoes and boots, by evaluating their ability to insulate against heat or cold. The primary objective is to provide reliable information on footwear comfort related to temperature management. EN ISO 20877:2011 is intended for use in the evaluation of non-protective, closed footwear and does not cover shoes used as personal protective equipment (PPE).
Key Topics
- Thermal Insulation Measurement: Outlines procedures for testing how well a shoe insulates against temperature changes, both retaining heat and protecting against cold.
- Whole Shoe Testing: Applies to complete footwear items rather than just materials or components, ensuring results reflect real-world performance.
- Comfort Assessment: Focuses on providing objective data to help manufacturers, retailers, and consumers evaluate and compare the comfort level of shoes under various thermal conditions.
- Standardized Test Conditions: Ensures consistency and repeatability across laboratories and brands by defining equipment, sample preparation, and result reporting.
- Exclusions: Specifically does not address footwear designed as personal protective equipment (PPE), which are governed by other relevant standards.
Applications
- Footwear Design and Development: Enables footwear manufacturers to objectively measure and optimize designs for thermal comfort, leading to shoes better suited to specific climates or activities.
- Quality Assurance: Facilitates routine testing during production or before product launch to ensure consistency in thermal insulation performance across different batches.
- Consumer Information: Offers brands a credible means to substantiate comfort claims regarding insulation, helping consumers make informed purchases.
- Comparative Testing: Provides standardized methodology for comparing various footwear models or styles in terms of their ability to protect against thermal discomfort.
- Research & Innovation: Serves as a foundational reference for further studies, innovation, and advancement in materials or footwear technologies targeting improved temperature control.
Related Standards
- ISO 20344:2011 - Personal protective equipment – Test methods for footwear: Referenced for specific test equipment and procedures, particularly where insulated footwear is involved.
- ISO 19952 - Footwear – Vocabulary: Provides standardized definitions and terminology used within EN ISO 20877:2011.
- EN 12784:1999 - Superseded by EN ISO 20877:2011.
Practical Value
EN ISO 20877:2011 delivers significant benefits to the footwear industry by enabling manufacturers and testing laboratories to assess and communicate the thermal comfort of footwear reliably and consistently. By following its methods, organizations enhance product quality, increase consumer trust, and support scientific comparison and innovation in unregulated (non-PPE) shoes and boots. Adoption of this standard underpins the development of seasonally-appropriate, climate-optimized, and comfort-focused footwear ranges for global markets.
