Overview
CEN ISO/TS 20961:2026 is an international standard that specifies the performance requirements for shank components used in all types of footwear. Shanks are critical structural elements in shoes, contributing to stability and support, especially in heeled or work-oriented footwear. This standard applies regardless of the material used for the shank and incorporates essential fitness-for-purpose criteria to ensure performance across diverse end uses. CEN ISO/TS 20961:2026 is a valuable resource for footwear manufacturers and suppliers, providing clear benchmarks for the evaluation of shank quality and durability.
Key Topics
- Performance Requirements: Establishes clear performance benchmarks for shank components in footwear, focusing on factors such as fatigue resistance and longitudinal stiffness.
- Test Methods: Recommends standardized test procedures to evaluate compliance, ensuring comparability and reliability of results.
- Classification: Footwear is categorized based on intended use and level of exposure, which informs the specific shank requirements:
- Class A: Infants’ shoes, slippers, indoor and fashion shoes.
- Class B: Casual and children’s footwear.
- Class C: Sport shoes, adult work shoes (excluding PPE).
- Class D: Heavy-duty, trekking, and similar sports shoes.
- Marking and Labelling: Provides guidance on optional marking to indicate compliance, strengthening consumer and stakeholder confidence in product quality.
- Reference Document: This standard can be cited in contracts and supply agreements between manufacturers and suppliers to confirm the quality and suitability of the supplied shank components.
Applications
CEN ISO/TS 20961:2026 is applicable to a wide range of footwear manufacturing and supply chain scenarios:
- Manufacturing: Assists footwear manufacturers in designing and selecting suitable shank components, ensuring that finished products meet international standards for performance and durability.
- Procurement and Quality Assurance: Enables suppliers and procurement professionals to evaluate shank quality and provides objective criteria for supplier assessment and acceptance testing.
- End-Use Suitability: Ensures that footwear delivered to consumers is appropriate for its intended use, helping to prevent premature failure or inadequate support, particularly in demanding environments.
- Product Certification and Compliance: Can serve as a reference in product certification programs and supports the demonstration of conformity with recognized international standards.
- Market Access: Facilitates trade and international acceptance by harmonizing requirements across countries and simplifying regulatory checks for footwear exports.
Related Standards
Implementing CEN ISO/TS 20961:2026 may involve reference to several related standards within the footwear industry:
- ISO 17709: Sampling location, preparation, and duration of conditioning of samples and test pieces.
- ISO 18895: Test methods for shanks - Fatigue resistance.
- ISO 18896: Test methods for shanks - Longitudinal stiffness.
- ISO 19952: Vocabulary for footwear, providing standardized definitions.
- ISO 80000-1: Guidance on quantities and units.
