Overview
EN ISO 14935:2020 establishes a standardized method for measuring the wick flame persistence of fire-resistant fluids in the petroleum and related products sector. Issued by CEN and aligned with ISO 14935:2020, this standard specifies procedures for assessing how long a flame persists after being applied to a non-flammable wick immersed in a fire-resistant fluid. The purpose is to evaluate the fire resistance capabilities of fluids commonly used in industrial settings, particularly hydraulic systems. This test forms one of four essential flammability assessments for these fluids. It is important to note that EN ISO 14935:2020 is not applicable to all fluid types, such as HFAE and HFAS liquids, nor does it address the behavior of fluid sprays, which are covered by separate standards.
Keywords: fire-resistant fluids, wick flame persistence, petroleum products, flammability test, hydraulic fluid fire safety, EN ISO 14935:2020.
Key Topics
- Test Methodology: Specifies the procedure for applying a standardized flame to a non-flammable wick soaked in the fire-resistant fluid and measuring how long the flame persists once the source is removed.
- Testing Conditions: Conducted at ambient laboratory temperature in still air using prescribed apparatus and qualified materials for consistency and repeatability.
- Scope Limitations: Not intended for spray behavior evaluation and excludes certain fluid classes (e.g., HFAE and HFAS).
- Result Reporting: Requires precise documentation including sample details, observed burning times, deviations from method, and sample conditions.
- Safety Guidance: Highlights the importance of adhering to safety procedures given the test involves hazardous materials and open flames.
Applications
EN ISO 14935:2020 is a vital reference in industries where fire-resistant fluids are utilized for enhanced safety, especially in hydraulic and lubrication systems. Typical applications include:
- Hydraulic Equipment: Used to evaluate hydraulic fluids for compliance with fire-resistance and safety requirements in manufacturing, mining, and heavy industry.
- Industrial Maintenance: Fluid manufacturers and operators use this test to ensure products meet fire safety standards before deployment in critical environments.
- Quality Assurance: Laboratories rely on this standardized method to generate reliable, comparable data for classifying and certifying fire-resistant fluids.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supporting documentation for fluid selection and approval in adherence with safety regulations and ISO requirements.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive fire safety evaluation of petroleum-based and synthetic fluids, consider these related standards:
- ISO 12922: Specifications for hydraulic fluids in various categories, often referencing the wick flame persistence test as a minimum requirement for fire resistance.
- ISO 15029-1 & ISO 15029-2: Methods for assessing flame persistence and ignition characteristics of fluid sprays, complementing the EN ISO 14935:2020 method for non-spray conditions.
- ISO 3170: Manual sampling of petroleum liquids, referenced for proper sample collection in flammability tests.
- ISO 9162: Specifications for liquefied petroleum gases, relevant for procuring appropriate gases used in testing.
Practical Value
Adhering to EN ISO 14935:2020 ensures that fire-resistant fluids meet recognized fire safety benchmarks, enhancing industrial safety and supporting compliance with both national and international regulations. The standardized wick flame persistence test delivers repeatable results, enabling better comparison of products and informed decision-making in high-risk sectors. This contributes to reduced fire hazards, safer workplaces, and improved operational reliability where petroleum and related products are used.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
