Overview

EN 30-2-1:2024 is a European standard published by CEN that defines the requirements and test methods for the rational use of energy in domestic cooking appliances burning gas. This standard builds on the safety requirements provided in EN 30-1-1:2021+A1:2023 and aims to optimize energy consumption and efficiency in gas-fueled household cooking devices, such as cooking ranges, hobs, and ovens. The document provides a unified framework for measuring, evaluating, and enhancing energy efficiency, supporting both manufacturers and regulatory bodies in achieving energy performance targets and ensuring compliance with European Union regulations.

Key Topics

  • Rational Use of Energy: The standard outlines criteria that domestic gas cooking appliances must meet to be considered energy efficient. It sets minimum energy efficiency thresholds for different types of burners and ovens.
  • Performance Characteristics: Key performance parameters include the energy efficiency of uncovered and covered burners, hob efficiency, and the maintenance heat input of ovens.
  • Test Methods: Detailed procedures are provided for conducting tests under standardized conditions, ensuring consistent and reliable assessment of energy usage.
  • Presumption of Conformity: Adhering to EN 30-2-1:2024 is recognized as evidence of conformity with the essential energy requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/426, covering appliances burning gaseous fuels.
  • Alignment and Updates: The 2024 edition aligns with the latest referenced standards and provides updated guidance, particularly for the testing regime for burners with varying heat inputs.

Applications

EN 30-2-1:2024 delivers practical value for multiple stakeholders:

  • Manufacturers: By following the defined requirements and test methods, appliance producers can demonstrate compliance with EU energy efficiency regulations and market their products as energy-saving.
  • Quality Assurance and Testing Laboratories: The standard’s methods enable accurate, repeatable assessments of energy performance, supporting certification and product development.
  • Consumers: Appliances tested to EN 30-2-1:2024 offer verified energy efficiency, leading to lower gas consumption and reduced energy bills in domestic settings.
  • Regulatory Authorities: This standard assists in market surveillance, ensuring that domestic gas cooking appliances conform to legislative requirements for energy efficiency.

Common types of appliances covered by this standard include:

  • Freestanding cooking ranges burning gas
  • Built-in hobs and cooktops
  • Gas ovens designed for residential use

Test methods in EN 30-2-1:2024 are applied during the type testing phase, providing comparative performance data and supporting eco-design initiatives in line with EU directives.

Related Standards

  • EN 30-1-1:2021+A1:2023: Defines general safety requirements for domestic gas cooking appliances, and serves as a normative reference for EN 30-2-1:2024.
  • EN 15181:2017+A1:2020: Details methods for measuring energy consumption in gas-fired ovens, referenced for oven performance evaluation.
  • Regulation (EU) 2016/426: European Gas Appliances Regulation, establishing essential safety and energy requirements for appliances burning gaseous fuels.
  • Ecodesign Directive: Other regulatory frameworks may also affect appliances covered by this standard, particularly with respect to environmental performance.

EN 30-2-1:2024 is essential for ensuring that domestic gas cooking appliances contribute to energy-saving goals, support regulatory compliance, and promote sustainable use of natural resources in households across Europe. By following this harmonized standard, manufacturers, retailers, and consumers can be confident in the appliance’s energy performance and adherence to EU marketplace requirements.
