ASTM D6154-15(2021)e1
(Specification)Standard Specification for Chemically Modified Asphalt Cement for Use in Pavement Construction
Standard Specification for Chemically Modified Asphalt Cement for Use in Pavement Construction
ABSTRACT
This specification covers asphalt cements that have been modified by the addition of a chemical gellant. The asphalt cement used to prepare the chemically modified asphalt cement shall be prepared by the refining of crude petroleum by suitable methods. Chemically modified asphalt cements are normally produced by addition of a chemical stabilizer. However, any asphalt modifier may be used that will give the required test results when blended with the desired asphalt. Different test methods shall be performed in order to determine the following properties of the cement: penetration, viscosity, flash point using Cleveland open cup, solubility in trichloroethylene, softening point, residue from thin-film oven test.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers asphalt cements that have been modified by the addition of a chemical gellant. It was developed to provide a reference for specifying chemically modified asphalt cement and reflects the properties of currently available commercial products. The tests are intended to measure degree of modification, not performance characteristics. This is not intended to be a performance-based specification.
1.2 Chemically modified asphalt cements are normally produced by addition of a chemical stabilizer. However, any asphalt modifier may be used that will give the required test results when blended with the desired asphalt.
1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.4 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard.
1.5 The following precautionary statement pertains to the test method portion only, Section 5, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM D6154-15(2021)e1: Standard Specification for Chemically Modified Asphalt Cement for Use in Pavement Construction is a key international standard developed by ASTM International. This specification provides requirements for asphalt cements that are chemically modified through the addition of a chemical gellant or stabilizer, primarily for application in pavement construction. The document ensures that chemically modified asphalt cement meets certain physical and chemical property requirements, helping infrastructure professionals identify suitable materials for modern road and pavement systems.
Key Topics
- Chemically Modified Asphalt Cement: The standard focuses on asphalt cements altered by chemical gellants or stabilizers to enhance specific pavement properties.
- Material Preparation: Asphalt cement must be derived from crude petroleum using appropriate refining techniques and then modified with suitable chemical agents.
- Product Requirements: Key characteristics detailed in the standard include:
- Homogeneity and freedom from water
- No foaming upon heating to 180 °C
- Compliance with specified viscosity, penetration, flash point, softening point, solubility, and aging index values
- Test Methods: The standard references widely recognized ASTM test methods to verify compliance, such as:
- Viscosity (D4957)
- Penetration (D5/D5M)
- Flash Point (D92)
- Solubility (D2042, D7553)
- Softening Point (D36/D36M)
- Thin-Film Oven Test for Aging (D1754/D1754M)
- Safety and Regulatory Considerations: Users must consider all relevant safety, health, and environmental precautions when implementing the standard.
Applications
ASTM D6154-15(2021)e1 is commonly used in the following contexts:
- Pavement Construction: Specifies requirements for chemically modified asphalt cement used in constructing roads, highways, and other paved surfaces to improve material stability and performance.
- Material Selection and Quality Control: Helps engineers and material specifiers verify that asphalt materials meet required criteria for projects needing enhanced durability or specific characteristics.
- Sampling and Testing: References detailed test procedures to assess key properties such as viscosity, penetration, softening point, and flash point, ensuring materials are suitable for road-building applications.
- Industrial Guidelines: Offers manufacturers and governmental agencies a benchmark for the development, testing, and acceptance of chemically modified asphalt cements.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive assessment and consistent quality in pavement construction, ASTM D6154-15(2021)e1 should be used alongside related standards, including:
- ASTM D5/D5M: Test Method for Penetration of Bituminous Materials
- ASTM D36/D36M: Test Method for Softening Point of Bitumen (Ring-and-Ball Apparatus)
- ASTM D92: Test Method for Flash and Fire Points by Cleveland Open Cup Tester
- ASTM D140/D140M: Practice for Sampling Asphalt Materials
- ASTM D1754/D1754M: Test Method for Effects of Heat and Air on Asphaltic Materials (Thin-Film Oven Test)
- ASTM D2042 and D7553: Test Methods for Solubility of Asphalt Materials
By referencing these standards, users ensure they follow best practices in sampling, property testing, and quality assurance for chemically modified asphalt cements in pavement construction. This results in safer, more durable, and cost-effective road infrastructure.
