Standard Specification for Lubricant for Installation of Preformed Compression Seals in Concrete Pavements
ABSTRACT
This specification covers a lubricant suitable for facilitating the insertion and positioning of preformed elastomeric compression seals in prepared voids (usually contraction joints) in concrete pavements. The lubricant shall be based on polychloroprene, containing only soluble phenolic resins blended together with antioxidants and acid acceptors in a suitable mixture of organic solvents. The requirements of the lubricant are based on the performance of the lubricant as measured by its solids content, homogeneity, consistency and drying rate.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers a lubricant suitable for facilitating the insertion and positioning of preformed elastomeric compression seals in prepared voids (usually contraction joints) in concrete pavement.
1.2 The requirements of the lubricant are based on the performance of the lubricant as measured by its solids content, homogeneity, consistency, and drying rate.
1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The metric equivalents of U.S. customary units may be approximate.
1.4 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 7 of this specification. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM D2835-89(2017): Standard Specification for Lubricant for Installation of Preformed Compression Seals in Concrete Pavements is an internationally recognized standard developed by ASTM. This specification defines the requirements for lubricants used in aiding the insertion and positioning of preformed elastomeric compression seals into prepared voids-most commonly contraction joints-in concrete pavements. The lubricant ensures that the seals are installed efficiently, effectively, and without damage to the seal or pavement.
The standard outlines performance criteria based on the lubricant's solids content, homogeneity, consistency, and drying rate. Lubricants covered by this standard are specifically formulated from polychloroprene, soluble phenolic resins, antioxidants, acid acceptors, and a suitable blend of organic solvents.
Key Topics
- Product Requirements:
- Must be polychloroprene-based with soluble phenolic resins, antioxidants, and acid acceptors.
- Blended using appropriate organic solvents.
- Performance Properties:
- Solids Content: Nonvolatile content must meet a minimum threshold.
- Homogeneity: Lubricant must be uniform and free of lumps or agglomerates.
- Consistency: Defined viscosity ranges for hand and machine applications.
- Drying Rate: Lubricant must allow proper bonding and separation within specified times after application.
- Sampling and Testing:
- Procedures for sampling from production lots.
- Test methods to verify homogeneity, solids content, viscosity, and drying performance.
- Packaging and Handling:
- Requirements for packaging in secure commercial containers.
- Clear marking of manufacturer, product, batch, safety information, and handling instructions.
Applications
ASTM D2835-89(2017) is crucial in construction and maintenance of concrete pavements, particularly where preformed elastomeric compression seals are used to manage pavement joints. Its main practical applications include:
- Highway and Road Construction: Ensures the reliable insertion of compression seals in road joints, improving the lifespan and durability of concrete surfaces.
- Airport Runways and Taxiways: Facilitates the correct installation of joint seals in high-traffic environments.
- Industrial and Commercial Pavements: Used in large-scale concrete slabs where controlled joint sealing is necessary.
By using lubricants conforming to this standard, contractors benefit from:
- Easier and more consistent installation of joint seals.
- Minimized risk of damage to seals during installation.
- Assurance that the lubricant will perform predictably under specified conditions.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive quality and compatibility, the following standards are often referenced with or used alongside ASTM D2835-89(2017):
- ASTM D1084 - Test Methods for Viscosity of Adhesives: Used for determining the viscosity of the lubricant.
- ASTM D1644 - Test Methods for Nonvolatile Content of Varnishes: Specifies the procedure for solids content determination.
- ASTM Committee D04 standards: Further standards concerning road and paving materials, sealing systems, and installation practices.
Summary
ASTM D2835-89(2017) provides essential guidelines for specifying lubricants that enhance the installation of preformed elastomeric compression seals in concrete pavements. By adhering to this standard, users ensure effective seal installation, prolong pavement life, and maintain compliance with industry best practices. This standard supports quality assurance, construction efficiency, and product consistency across a wide range of concrete pavement applications.
