Standard Specification for Asphalt for Undersealing Portland-Cement Concrete Pavements

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the properties, sampling, and testing of asphalt suitable for undersealing Portland cement concrete and overlaid concrete pavements by pumping hot asphalt under the slabs. The asphalt shall be homogeneous and free of water and shall conform to the following requirements when examined under suitable testing methods: softening point; flash point; penetration at specified temperatures; ductility; heat loss; and solubility of bitumen in trichloroethylene.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers asphalt suitable for undersealing portland-cement concrete and overlaid concrete pavements by pumping hot asphalt under the slabs.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM D3141/D3141M-21: Standard Specification for Asphalt for Undersealing Portland-Cement Concrete Pavements is an internationally recognized ASTM standard that defines the requirements for asphalt used in undersealing existing portland-cement concrete pavements and overlaid concrete surfaces. The process involves pumping hot asphalt under concrete slabs to fill cavities, correct vertical alignment, and seal the underside of the slabs and joints. This specification ensures that the asphalt used is of suitable quality for effective pavement maintenance and rehabilitation.

Key Topics

  • Material Requirements: The standard specifies that asphalt must be homogeneous, free of water, and possess adequate consistency for pumping at elevated temperatures (204-232°C [400-450°F]). It must demonstrate resistance to displacement once in place and meet strict quality controls for undersealing concrete.
  • Performance Properties: Asphalt must comply with specific criteria for:
    • Softening point
    • Flash point
    • Penetration at various temperatures
    • Ductility at 25°C
    • Loss on heating
    • Solubility in trichloroethylene or n-propyl bromide
  • Sampling and Testing: Adherence to referenced ASTM methods for sampling and laboratory testing, including D5/D5M for penetration, D36/D36M for softening point, D92 for flash point, D6/D6M for heat loss, D113 for ductility, D2042 for solubility in trichloroethylene, D7553 for solubility in n-propyl bromide, and D140/D140M for sampling.
  • Dual Units: The standard recognizes both SI and inch-pound units as valid, but requires systems to be used independently to avoid nonconformance.

Applications

  • Pavement Undersealing: The principal application is the undersealing of portland-cement concrete pavements, an effective maintenance technique to correct settlement, restore load transfer, and minimize water ingress beneath concrete slabs.
  • Joint Sealing: The specified asphalt is also used to seal joints and the undersides of slabs, mitigating risks of further pavement damage and prolonging pavement lifespan.
  • Cavity Filling: Filling voids beneath concrete slabs using the prescribed asphalt helps restore surface uniformity, enhance ride quality, and maintain pavement integrity.
  • Surface Restoration: By raising sunken slabs through the lifting action of injected asphalt, road agencies can avoid costly full-depth repairs, ensuring quicker reopening and improved long-term performance.
