Overview
ASTM D1007-11(2019) is the internationally recognized standard specification for sec-butyl alcohol, also referred to as 2-butanol or secondary butanol. Developed by ASTM International, this standard outlines key properties, quality requirements, and appropriate test methods to ensure that sec-butyl alcohol is suitable for use in paints, varnishes, lacquers, and related products. The specification applies to procurement, testing, and acceptance processes and is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and quality assurance professionals in chemical and coatings industries.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
Specifies sec-butyl alcohol for applications in paint, varnish, lacquer, and similar products, with all property values stated in SI units.Quality and Purity Requirements
- Apparent Specific Gravity: Ensures chemical consistency and suitability for industrial applications.
- Color (Pt-Co Scale): Sets a maximum threshold to maintain product clarity and appearance.
- Distillation Range: Defines initial boiling point and dry point, ensuring proper volatility for coatings applications.
- Nonvolatile Matter: Limits nonvolatile residues to safeguard performance in final formulations.
- Water Content: Sets a maximum water percentage, minimizing contamination and preserving solvent effectiveness.
- Acidity (as acetic acid): Controls acid content to avoid adverse reactions in coatings.
Sampling and Testing Methods
Integrates validated ASTM procedures for reliable and repeatable results, including methods for density, color, distillation, nonvolatile content, water determination, and acidity.Packaging and Marking
Outlines packaging requirements to comply with applicable regulations and mutual agreements between suppliers and purchasers.International Standardization Compliance
Developed according to World Trade Organization (WTO) TBT principles, supporting global trade and regulatory alignment.
Applications
ASTM D1007-11(2019) is critical in industries where sec-butyl alcohol is utilized for its solvent properties and compatibility, including:
- Paints and Coatings: Maintains physical and chemical consistency for formulation and application.
- Varnishes and Lacquers: Ensures optimal performance with requirements for purity and volatility.
- Quality Control: Provides a framework for sampling, analysis, and acceptance, supporting manufacturers and inspection agencies.
- Procurement and Specification Compliance: Enables buyers and suppliers to align on standardized lot acceptance criteria, reducing supplier-customer disputes.
Utilizing this standard assures that sec-butyl alcohol meets strict quality benchmarks, minimizing formulation variability and facilitating regulatory approvals.
Related Standards
To achieve complete conformance with ASTM D1007-11(2019), reference is made to several recognized standards and practices, including:
- ASTM D268: Guide for sampling and testing volatile solvents and chemical intermediates.
- ASTM D1078: Test method for distillation range of volatile organic liquids.
- ASTM D1209 and D5386: Test methods for color of clear liquids using the Platinum-Cobalt scale and tristimulus colorimetry.
- ASTM D1353: Test method for nonvolatile matter.
- ASTM D1364: Test method for water content using Karl Fischer reagent titration.
- ASTM D1613: Test method for acidity in volatile solvents.
