Overview

SIST EN 302 454-2 V1.1.1:2007 is a harmonized European standard developed under the auspices of the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and ETSI. This document is crucial for ensuring electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and optimal radio spectrum use by radiosondes within the meteorological aids (Met Aids) service, operating specifically in the 1 668.4 MHz to 1 690 MHz frequency range. The standard addresses the essential requirements outlined in Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive (1999/5/EC), which mandates that radio equipment must utilize allocated spectrum efficiently and avoid causing harmful interference.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Compliance
SIST EN 302 454-2 specifies the minimum requirements for radiosondes supporting meteorological observation by guaranteeing compliance with technical and spectrum regulations. Adherence ensures the equipment:
    • Operates within defined frequency limits (1 668.4 MHz to 1 690 MHz)
    • Minimizes risk of harmful interference with other radio services
  • Essential Technical Requirements
The core requirements established by the standard include:
    • Control of frequency error
    • Maximum allowable carrier power (conducted and radiated)
    • Limits on power spectral density
    • Control of spurious emissions
    • Maintenance of frequency stability, even under low-voltage conditions
  • Testing and Measurement
For compliance, radiosondes are subject to rigorous testing regimes covering:
    • Environmental operating profiles
    • Standardized transmitter performance tests
    • Measurement uncertainty reporting, supporting reliable results

Applications

  • Radiosonde Manufacturing and Deployment
Manufacturers and integrators of radiosondes must apply this standard when designing products for use in meteorological data gathering. This ensures:
    • Reliable operation in the specified UHF frequency band
    • Compatibility with existing radio spectrum resources
  • Meteorological Services
National weather agencies and research institutions use radiosondes conforming to SIST EN 302 454-2 to collect atmospheric data, such as temperature, humidity, and pressure. Conformance supports uninterrupted and accurate radio telemetry to ground receivers.
  • Regulatory Approval and Conformity Assessment
Radiosonde equipment that meets this harmonized standard benefits from simplified conformity assessment and is more readily accepted within the European market, meeting the obligations of the R&TTE Directive for electromagnetic compatibility and spectrum use.

Related Standards

  • EN 302 454-1
Technical characteristics and test methods for radiosondes in the same frequency band
  • ETSI EN 301 489-1

Practical Value

By following SIST EN 302 454-2 V1.1.1:2007, organizations ensure that meteorological radiosondes are electrically compatible and efficiently use spectrum, minimizing cross-service interference and supporting critical atmospheric research. Compliance with this standard is essential for manufacturers targeting European and international markets, enabling smooth regulatory approval and consistent data for meteorological operations.
