Overview
SIST EN 300 147 V1.4.1:2003 is a pivotal European standard that defines the multiplexing structure for Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) transmission and multiplexing systems. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) and harmonized with ETSI EN 300 147, this standard reflects updates in information technology following the publication of ITU-T Recommendation G.707 (3/96). SDH technology underpins modern optical and digital transport networks, enabling robust, high-capacity data transmission across telecommunications infrastructures worldwide.
By specifying hierarchical bit rates, mapping schemes, multiplexing methods, and related conformance criteria, SIST EN 300 147 V1.4.1 ensures vendor interoperability and compatibility across SDH network elements. The standard provides essential guidelines for telecommunications providers, equipment manufacturers, and network operators in designing and maintaining SDH-based networks.
Keywords: SDH, synchronous digital hierarchy, multiplexing, transmission systems, telecommunications, network node interface, SIST EN 300 147, ITU-T G.707.
Key Topics
- Multiplexing Structure: Outlines the hierarchical structure for bit rates and mapping of lower-order signals into SDH virtual containers (VC-n), supporting efficient data aggregation and transport.
- Basic Multiplexing Principles: Defines essential aspects of the SDH multiplexing process, including frame structures and section overhead bytes for management and signaling.
- Pointers: Describes pointer mechanisms used for dynamic alignment of payload within SDH frames to maintain synchronization across the network.
- Overhead Bytes: Details the types and functions of overhead bytes for operations, administration, maintenance, and management (OAM).
- Mapping Schemes: Specifies the mapping of tributary signals (as defined in ITU-T G.702) into SDH containers for flexible service adaptation.
- VC Concatenation: Supports both contiguous and virtual concatenation for higher bandwidth applications and transport of diverse payload types.
- Conformance Testing: Establishes principles for verifying equipment compliance to ensure interoperability between products from different vendors.
Applications
SIST EN 300 147 V1.4.1:2003 is crucial in a wide range of telecommunications contexts:
- Core Transmission Networks: Used to design backbones for national and international telecommunication providers, ensuring seamless high-capacity data flow.
- Service Aggregation: Enables integration of various digital services such as voice, data, and video into unified transport streams.
- Carrier-Grade Networks: Provides the foundation for building reliable, scalable networks supporting both legacy TDM and emerging packet-based services.
- Network Modernization: Assists operators in the migration from older PDH systems to robust SDH infrastructures, offering improved synchronization and manageability.
- Inter-Operator Compatibility: Ensures network elements from different manufacturers and operators can interconnect, facilitating open, competitive telecom markets.
- Testing and Certification: Offers a benchmark for manufacturers to conduct equipment conformance testing, reducing faults and ensuring service quality.
Related Standards
To achieve comprehensive SDH deployment and management, refer to the following related standards:
- ITU-T Recommendation G.707: Defines the network node interface for SDH, forming the technical basis for SIST EN 300 147.
- ITU-T Recommendation G.702: Specifies digital hierarchy bit rates relevant for tributary mapping.

Within each byte, the most significant bit is transmitted first. The most significant bit (bit 1) is illustrated at the left in all diagrams. In clauses 4 to 10, the status of each requirement is given with reference to ITU-T Recommendation G.707 [1] with the following conventions: Normative (N): Requirements with which it is necessary to comply in order to be able to claim compliance with the present document. Not Relevant (N/R): Clause (of ITU-T Recommendation G.707 [1]) is not relevant to the present document. The present document is not an equipment specification. The fact that a requirement is defined as normative does not imply that the associated function has to be implemented but means that, if implemented, the function shall be implemented in accordance with this requirement.
