Overview

SIST ETS 300 412 E1:2003 is a Slovenian national standard that adopts and harmonizes the ETSI ETS 300 412 standard. It focuses on Transmission and Multiplexing (TM) within telecommunications networks, specifically providing an information model for the configuration of payloads in Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) network elements (NEs). The standard enables clear definitions for SDH payload configuration at the level of individual network elements, supporting robust network management and scalability.

Key Topics

  • SDH Payload Configuration: Defines how the management system can configure and monitor SDH payload structures within network elements.
  • Information Model: Provides a model describing managed object classes, attributes, actions, and relationships relevant to payload configuration. The focus is on objects exchanged between network elements and management interfaces as specified by relevant ITU-T recommendations.
  • Network Element View: The standard’s scope is limited to the information and configuration visible and managed at the network element level, rather than the broader network management level.
  • Terminology and Object Classes: Establishes commonly used abbreviations (e.g., NE, TMN, VCn, TTP, CTP) and key managed objects that represent SDH-specific payload elements.
  • Interface Alignment: Designed to support Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) requirements and align with international recommendations such as ITU-T M.3010 and ITU-T G.774.2.

Applications

This standard is highly relevant for manufacturers, operators, and integrators in the telecommunications sector, particularly those implementing or maintaining SDH network infrastructures.

  • Equipment Configuration: Used by network management systems (NMS) to provision and reconfigure the payload structure within SDH NEs, enabling flexible use of network capacity and quick adaptation to service changes.
  • Interoperability: Assists in ensuring that SDH NEs from various vendors can be managed consistently across multi-vendor networks, as the information model adheres to established international frameworks.
  • Operations and Maintenance: Facilitates fault isolation, performance monitoring, and capacity management by structuring how payload information is modeled and exchanged between management systems and NEs.
  • Vendor Neutral Management: By abstracting payload configuration into an information model, this standard supports integration with third-party management applications and automation tools.

Related Standards

SIST ETS 300 412 E1:2003 is designed to align with, and often used in conjunction with, several important international standards and recommendations:

  • ITU-T Recommendation M.3010: Principles for a telecommunications management network, providing the main architecture for network management.
  • ITU-T Recommendation G.774.2: Focuses specifically on SDH payload structure configuration and network element information models.
  • ITU-T G.707, G.708, G.709: Define SDH bit rates, interfaces, and multiplexing structure.
  • ITU-T G.783, G.784: Describe functional blocks and management aspects of SDH equipment.
  • CCITT Recommendations X.208, X.701, X.720, X.721, X.722, X.730: Cover ASN.1 notation, systems management, and information modeling approaches commonly applied in TMN environments.

Keywords: SDH, network element, payload configuration, transmission and multiplexing, telecommunications management, information model, network management, TMN, ETSI standard, SIST standard.

Implementing SIST ETS 300 412 E1:2003 ensures consistency, interoperability, and efficient payload configuration management in modern SDH-based telecommunication networks.

1 Scope
This European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) provides an information model for the payload
configuration management of Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) networks. This model describes the
managed object classes and their properties for the payload configuration function as related to SDH
Network Elements (NEs). These objects are useful to describe information exchanged across interfaces
defined in CCITT Recommendation M.3010 [1] Telecommunications Management Network (TMN)
architecture for the management of the payload configuration function.
This ETS defines:
- an information model, as related to the payload configuration for the SDH.
This ETS does not define:
- the protocol stack to be used for message communication;
- the network level management processes;
- the application contexts;
- the conformance requirements to be met by an implementation of this information model;
- information models for other systems or equipment.
The information model defined here (and the corresponding message set) is concerned with the
management of NEs, the equipment by which they are implemented and the functions contained within
them. More precisely, it applies to an equipment domain visible at the element manager to element
interface and is only concerned with information available within that domain. Information proper to the
domain of a network level management process is not included with
