explosives for blasting.
This document does not apply to boosters and explosive substances.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 13857-1:2025 apply.

4 Principle
The velocity of detonation is an important performance characteristic of explosives for blasting.
The determination of the velocity of detonation (VOD) is carried out by measuring the time it takes the
detonation front to travel a distance through a test piece. The test is carried out either under confinement
or without. Depending on the measuring equipment, the velocity of detonation is calculated from the
measured time and the measured distance or derived from the distance over time test records.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Means of initiation, as specified for the explosive tested in accordance with EN 13631-1:2025,
4.1.4, being a detonator, a detonating cord with a detonator or a booster with a detonator.
5.2 Steel tube, of steel grade S 235 in accordance with EN 10025-2:2019, Clause 4 and Tables 1, 3 and
6, and with dimensions in accordance with EN 10216-1:2013, Table 7.
In case of bulk explosives, the resulting inner diameter of the steel tube shall be the nearest diameter
equal to or greater than the minimum diameter specified in accordance with EN 13631-1:2025, 4.1.9. The
wall thickness of the steel tube shall be the smallest preferred value as given for the outer diameter in
EN 10216-1:2013, Table 7.
In case of cartridged explosives being tested under confinement, the resulting inner diameter of the steel
tube shall have the smallest diameter where the cartridges with the minimum diameter specified in
accordance with EN 13631-1:2025, 4.1.9, can still be inserted. The wall thickness of the steel tube shall
be the smallest preferred value as given for the outer diameter in EN 10216-1:2013, Table 7.
If the start-stop-method (5.4.1) is used for measuring the velocity of detonation, there shall be two holes
in the tube to allow the insertion of the sensors of the measuring equipment at positions in accordance
with 7.1.1. The diameter of the holes shall be just large enough for the sensors to be inserted.
5.3 Plastic liner, made of a thin plastic film. The plastic liner shall have a cylindrical shape.
