a) the document title has been changed from “Explosives for civil uses — High explosives — Part 6:
Determination of resistance to hydrostatic pressure” to “Explosives for civil uses — Explosives for
blasting, boosters and explosive substances — Part 6: Verification of the resistance to hydrostatic
pressure of explosives for blasting and boosters”;
b) the Scope has been revised and now specifies the covered and not covered explosives;
c) the normative references have been updated;
d) the Clause 4 “Principle” has been added;
e) the Clause “Apparatus” and Figure 1 have been revised; Figure 2 has been removed;
f) the former Clause “Test pieces” is now called “Clause 6 Preparation of test sample” and has been
revised;
g) the new Clause 7 “Procedure” provides with a completely revised test method to verify the
resistance to hydrostatic - for explosives for blasting, testing is now done under confinement at the
specified maximum temperature of use;
h) the Clause 8 “Expression of results” has been added;
i) the Clause “Test report” does no longer require conformity with EN ISO/IEC 17025 and the
information to be provided has been revised;
j) the former Annex A “Range of applicability of the test method” has been removed;
k) the Annex ZA has been updated;
l) the Bibliography has been added and lists EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request addressed to CEN by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 13857-1:2025 apply.

4 Principle
Hydrostatic pressure can adversely affect the safety or reliability of explosives resulting in a failure to
initiate or to detonate completely. To verify the resistance against hydrostatic pressure, a test piece is
immersed into water at the highest temperature of use as specified for the explosive and the maximum
hydrostatic pressure as for which resistance to is specified for the explosive is applied. The water
temperature is kept at the specified maximum temperature of use throughout the test. Afterwards, the
explosive is initiated, and complete detonation verified.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Testing tube (see Figure 1), made from a material and with dimensions able to withstand the
hydrostatic pressure as specified in accordance with EN 13631-1:2025, 4.1.6 for explosives for blasting
or with EN 13631-1:2025, 6.1.4, for boosters, and the maximum temperature of use specified for the
test explosive in accordance with EN 13631-1:2025, 4.1.1 for explosives for blasting or with
EN 13631-1:2025, 6.1.1 for boosters, when assembled with the seals (5.2). The testing tube may be
closed at one end. In addition, the length and the inner diameter of the testing tube shall be large
enough such that the test piece when assembled as specified in 7.1 or 7.2, as applicable, can be
accommodated. It shall be possible to release applied pressure from the testing tube without opening it
once assembled; this can be done, for example, by means of a venting system in the testing tube, in one
of the seals (5.2) or in the pressure system (5.3).

5.2 Seal(s), that provide a watertight and airtight closure for the testing tube (5.1) and that shall be
capable to hold the applied pressure specified in accordance with EN 13631-1:2025, 4.1.6 or 6.1.4, as
applicable, when assembled with the testing tube (5.1). The seal(s) shall incorporate cable feedthroughs
to lead out the ends of the means of initiation (5.4) a
