Overview
kSIST FprEN ISO 17651-3:2025 is an international standard developed by CEN, specifying the requirements and recommendations for the design, equipment, and operation of interpreting hubs used in simultaneous interpreting. As the third part of the ISO 17651 series, this standard aims to ensure both usability and accessibility of interpreting hubs for all interpreters, including those with disabilities. It builds upon key standards such as ISO 20109 and ISO 24019, which address the technical equipment and platforms necessary for high-quality simultaneous interpreting.
By providing clear guidelines for facilities, IT infrastructure, equipment, and interpreter support, kSIST FprEN ISO 17651-3:2025 supports organizations, event organizers, and interpreting service providers to create optimal working environments for interpreters, particularly those working remotely or from dedicated interpreting hubs.
Key Topics
Interpreting Hub Design: The standard outlines how interpreting hubs should be sited and constructed to minimize disturbances and facilitate efficient workflow, comfort, and collaboration among interpreters.
- Hubs should be easily accessible by public and private transport
- Strategic placement to avoid noise and disturbance from other building areas
Accessibility and Usability: Requirements ensure interpreting hubs and booths are accessible to all users. At least 10% of the booths must be accessible to persons with disabilities, in line with ISO 21542.
Booth Specifications:
- Booths for both spoken and signed language interpreting must provide adequate space, ergonomics, acoustics, lighting, and sight lines as detailed in associated standards (ISO 17651-1 & ISO 20109).
- Visual and acoustic separation to maintain confidentiality and comfort
IT Infrastructure: Dedicated, robust, and secure IT infrastructure is essential for uninterrupted, high-quality simultaneous interpreting.
- Redundant internet connections and individual wired connections for each interpreter workstation
- Real-time technical control and support to maintain the quality and security of audio and video signals
Interpreting Equipment: Compliance with the technical requirements set out in ISO 20109 and ISO 24019, including the use of hard or soft interpreter consoles, microphones, headsets, and video displays.
Interpreter Amenities: Appropriate amenities, such as toilets and interpreters’ rest rooms, must be provided in proximity to the booths to support interpreter well-being during assignments.
Applications
kSIST FprEN ISO 17651-3:2025 is relevant for a wide range of organizations and facilities, including:
- Conference Centers and Public Buildings: To support multilingual events by providing professional interpreting environments, whether with permanent or ad hoc hub setups.
- Remote Interpreting Service Providers: To ensure distance interpreting hubs meet recognized international standards for technical quality, usability, and accessibility.
- Event Organizers & Corporate Meeting Venues: For planning and equipping spaces used for international conferences, webinars, or hybrid meetings requiring simultaneous language interpretation.
- Government and Institutional Settings: For the consistent implementation of high-quality interpreting infrastructure in support of official multilingual communication.
By implementing these requirements, organizations can guarantee a professional, efficient, and accessible environment for interpreters, reducing cognitive load and supporting high-quality language services for diverse communicative events.
Related Standards
kSIST FprEN ISO 17651-3:2025 references and should be implemented in conjunction with several other key standards:

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described

Introduction
In light of the surge in distance interpreting, new working environments for simultaneous interpreting have
developed.
This document concerns purpose-built and ad hoc interpreting hubs which allow interpreters to provide
interpreting when they are at a location other than that of all participants of a communicative event without
a direct view of the proceedings and where technical support is provided.
Interpreting is an activity that requires high levels of concentration. The working environment shall
minimize factors which add to cognitive load.
This document addresses the following:
a) distinct workplace requirements as compared to booths with a direct view of the communicative event;
b) dedicated IT infrastructure and technical control;
c) communication between interpreters, and between interpreters and specialised technical support staff.
NOTE This document focusses on simultaneous interpreting; it is also applicable to consecutive interpreting.
This document is the third part in the series of standards ISO 17651 on Simultaneous interpreting —
Interpreters' working environment. It complements the other parts of the series, Part 1: Requirements and
recommendations for permanent booths, and Part 2: Requirements and recommendations for mobile booths.
