Overview

SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 specifies the multiplexing structure for Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) in European transmission networks. This Slovenian standard, aligned with ETSI and based on recommendations G.707, G.708, and G.709, defines the hierarchical bit rates, multiplexing methods, and mapping schemes essential for SDH networks. The key objective is to ensure interoperability between equipment and operators by standardizing how digital signals are organized and transmitted over synchronous networks, laying the groundwork for modern high-speed telecommunication systems.

Key Topics

  • Hierarchical bit rates: Defines standardized SDH bit rates as per G.707, ensuring compatibility across SDH networks for various payload capacities.
  • Multiplexing structure: Outlines the basic arrangement of SDH signals from lower to higher levels, permitting the efficient aggregation and transport of multiple signals.
  • Mapping and multiplexing methods: Establishes standardized schemes to map diverse digital signals (such as 2 Mbps, 34 Mbps, and 140 Mbps) into SDH containers and higher order structures, as detailed in G.709.
  • Administrative and Tributary Units: Provides guidance on the organization and multiplexing of Administrative Units (AU), Tributary Units (TU), and their respective groups (AUG, TUG), which are essential building blocks in SDH.
  • Pointers and Path Overhead: Specifies the use of pointers for flexible alignment of payload within the SDH frame, and the handling of path overhead for network management and maintenance.
  • Mapping of legacy and new services: Supports encapsulation and transport of various payloads, including ATM cells and asynchronous data, offering flexibility for evolving network services.

Applications

SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 is widely applicable in the following areas:

  • Telecommunications network infrastructure: Used by network operators and equipment manufacturers to develop, deploy, and maintain SDH-based transmission networks, ensuring reliable and high-capacity digital infrastructure.
  • Interoperability: Facilitates seamless interconnection between different vendors' telecom equipment by providing common multiplexing and mapping methods.
  • Integration of legacy systems: Supports efficient transport of lower order signals (such as PDH) in a modern SDH network, helping operators transition legacy services without service disruption.
  • Carrier and service provider networks: Critical for backbone and metro networks where stable, scalable, and flexible transmission of multiple digital services is required.
  • Migration to next-generation services: Enables the support of broadband applications, high-speed internet, and multimedia by accommodating ATM and other emerging data formats.
  • Network maintenance and management: Defines clear procedures for signal alignment, error checking, and network supervision, contributing to robust network performance and reliability.

Related Standards

The following standards are closely related to SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003 and are often referenced in SDH deployments:

  • ITU-T G.707: Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) bit rates - defines the framework of hierarchical bit rates for global SDH networks.
  • ITU-T G.708: Network node interface for the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy - standards for interfaces at network nodes, ensuring interoperability.
  • ITU-T G.709: Synchronous multiplexing structure - provides detailed structures and mapping techniques for SDH multiplexing.
  • ETSI EN 300 147 / ETS 300 147: The European standards equivalent, upon which this Slovenian version is based.
  • SIST ETS 300 429: Covers various aspects of SDH transmission systems relevant within Slovenia and Europe.

By adhering to SIST ETS 300 147 E1:2003, network designers and operators ensure a standardized approach to SDH multiplexing, supporting high-performance, scalable, and interoperable telecommunications infrastructures in line with European and international requirements.
