Overview
SIST EN 16603-50-23:2022 - Space engineering – Adoption Notice of CCSDS 732.0-B-3, AOS Space Data Link Protocol is a European standard developed by CEN for the space systems sector. The document formalizes the application of the CCSDS 732.0-B-3 "AOS Space Data Link Protocol" within the European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) framework. This standard specifies the modifications to the original CCSDS protocol necessary for its adoption in European space missions. The purpose is to ensure efficient, standardized data transfer over space-to-ground and space-to-space communication links, supporting interoperability and robust space system operations.
Key Topics
- Alignment with CCSDS Protocols: Aligns the ECSS system of standards with internationally recognized CCSDS space data link protocols, specifically focusing on the AOS (Advanced Orbiting Systems) Space Data Link Protocol.
- Modified Scope for European Application: Clearly identifies the specific clauses and requirements in CCSDS 732.0-B-3 that are modified for ECSS, ensuring practical integration in European projects.
- Transfer Frame Handling: Clarifies the use of features such as the Replay Flag, noting stricter requirements in ECSS to streamline processing and reduce complexity at the receiving end.
- Error Control Measures: Addresses the recommended use of Frame Header Error Control, especially in cases where error-correcting coding schemes like Reed-Solomon are already in place.
- Superseding Previous Standards: Replaces earlier standards (e.g., EN 16603-50-03:2014) to reflect advances and ensure up-to-date guidance for space data handling.
Applications
SIST EN 16603-50-23:2022 is essential for organizations involved in:
- Spacecraft Communications: Used in the design and implementation of onboard systems managing data transfer from space vehicles to ground stations and between spacecraft.
- Satellite Operations: Ensures standardized protocols for telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C) data exchanged during satellite missions.
- Interoperability Projects: Facilitates compatibility across international and cross-agency space missions by aligning European practices with global CCSDS standards.
- Space Mission Planning: Supports mission planning engineers and systems architects designing compliant data handling architectures for new satellites and payloads.
- Testing and Validation: Provides a reference for test engineers validating the compliance of communication subsystems with ECSS requirements.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive space data link framework, SIST EN 16603-50-23:2022 should be used alongside the following standards:
- EN 16603-50-21: Adoption Notice of CCSDS 131.0-B-3, TM Synchronization and Channel Coding

In the standard CCSDS 732.0-B-3 “AOS Space Data Link Protocol” CCSDS
specifies a data link layer protocol for the efficient transfer of space application
data of various types and characteristics over space links. The protocol specified
in CCSDS 732.0-B-3 “AOS Space Data Link Protocol” has a similar purpose as
CCSDS 132.0-B-2 “TM Space Data Link Protocol” and supports some features
not available in the TM Space Data Link Protocol.
This Adoption Notice adopts and applies CCSDS 732.0-B-3 with a minimum set
of modifications, identified in the present document, to allow for reference and
for a consistent integration in the ECSS system of standards.
EN 16603-50-03:2014 (based on ECSS-E-ST-50-03) is superseded by the
following two Adoption Notices: EN 16603-50-22 (ECSS-E-AS-50-
