Overview

SIST-TS CEN/TS 15639:2010 specifies a standardized test method for determining the mechanical durability of pellets produced from solid recovered fuels. This technical specification, developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), is essential for organizations and professionals involved in the production, handling, purchase, sale, and utilization of pellets, as well as those working with related machinery and equipment. The standard excludes its application to soft pellets and is primarily focused on ensuring the quality and consistency of pellet fuels during handling and transport.

Mechanical durability is a key quality indicator for solid recovered fuel pellets, affecting their performance, handling safety, emissions, and suitability in automated feeding systems. Adhering to SIST-TS CEN/TS 15639:2010 enables stakeholders to assess and validate the resistance of pellets to fragmentation and dust generation, improving operational efficiency and fuel reliability.

Key Topics

  • Mechanical Durability Definition: The measure of a pellet's resistance to shocks and abrasion, assessed through its disintegration and the generation of fines (particles smaller than 1 mm).
  • Scope of Application: Intended for manufacturers, operators, and organizations involved in machinery, tools, plants, and associated processes for solid recovered fuel pellets.
  • Exclusion: The test method is not applicable to soft pellets, defined by their lower density (<600 kg/m³).
  • Test Principle: Mechanical durability is evaluated by tumbling a defined sample of pellets in a specific apparatus and measuring the percentage of mass retained after sieving out fines.
  • Apparatus Requirements:
    • Pellet tester with controlled rotation and dimensions.
    • Two types of sieves for particle separation.
    • Precision balance for accurate mass determination.
  • Sampling and Procedure: Clear guidelines for sample collection, preparation, and dividing, in line with related SRF sampling and moisture determination standards.
  • Reporting Requirements: Comprehensive documentation of test conditions, results, and any deviations or unusual observations.

Applications

Implementing SIST-TS CEN/TS 15639:2010 offers significant practical value in various sectors:

  • Quality Assurance: Ensures pellet fuels meet strict durability criteria, minimizing breakdown and dust during storage, transport, and handling.
  • Supplier and Purchaser Confidence: Provides an objective, standardized measure of product reliability for contracts and shipments.
  • Process Optimization: Enables producers to refine production parameters for maximum pellet integrity and durability.
  • Safety & Environmental Compliance: Reduces risks associated with dust emissions, supporting workplace safety and environmental requirements.
  • Compatibility with Automated Systems: Guarantees that pellets maintain their structural integrity in feeding mechanisms and combustion systems.

Related Standards

For comprehensive quality control across all stages of pellet production and testing, the following standards are closely linked to SIST-TS CEN/TS 15639:2010:

  • prEN 15357: Solid recovered fuels - Terminology, definitions, and descriptions.
  • prEN 15442: Solid recovered fuels - Methods for sampling.
  • prEN 15443: Solid recovered fuels - Methods for laboratory sample preparation.
  • CEN/TS 15414-1 & CEN/TS 15414-2: Determination of moisture content by oven dry method.
  • ISO 3310-2: Test sieves - Technical requirements and testing for sieves of perforated metal plate.

By following these standards together, stakeholders can ensure robust testing, reliable pellet quality assessments, and consistent compliance with European requirements for solid recovered fuels.
