General Information

Abstract

This European Standard specifies requirements for the design, fabrication, inspection and testing of static non-vacuum insulated cryogenic vessels designed for a maximum allowable pressure of more than 0,5 bar.
This European standard applies to static non-vacuum insulated cryogenic vessels for fluids as specified in EN 14197-1 and does not apply to vessels designed for toxic fluids.
For static non-vacuum insulated cryogenic vessels designed for a maximum allowable pressure of not more than 0,5 bar this European Standard may be used as a guide.

Overview

SIST EN 14197-2:2004/A1:2007 is a critical European Standard developed by CEN that provides comprehensive requirements for the design, fabrication, inspection, and testing of static non-vacuum insulated cryogenic vessels. These vessels are specifically designed for fluids as specified in EN 14197-1, with a maximum allowable pressure exceeding 0.5 bar. This standard excludes vessels intended for toxic fluids and serves as an important guideline for vessels operating at or below this pressure level.

Cryogenic vessels play a vital role in safely storing and handling gases and liquids at extremely low temperatures. Static non-vacuum insulated vessels, typically used in industrial and medical applications, require stringent safety and performance standards to ensure reliability. SIST EN 14197-2:2004/A1:2007 addresses these needs by setting mandatory technical and procedural standards that help manufacturers and operators maintain these vessels in compliance with European regulations.

Key Topics

This standard encompasses several critical areas essential to ensuring the safety and functionality of cryogenic vessels:

  • Design Requirements
Clear specifications guide the design process to ensure structural integrity and safety at pressures above 0.5 bar.

  • Fabrication Processes
Guidelines for materials, welding, and assembly techniques to guarantee high quality and durability.

  • Inspection and Testing
Procedures for systematic verification and validation during and after fabrication to detect any potential faults or weaknesses.

  • Non-Vacuum Insulation Characteristics
Focus on vessels without vacuum insulation, requiring particular attention to thermal performance and pressure resistance.

This standard emphasizes a preventive and systematic approach to safety, ensuring the vessels meet robust operational parameters to withstand cryogenic environments.

Applications

SIST EN 14197-2:2004/A1:2007 is widely applied across multiple sectors where cryogenic storage is vital:

  • Industrial Gas Storage
Including oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and other non-toxic gases that require cryogenic conditions.

  • Medical and Laboratory Fields
Static vessels used for medical gases storage and research environments demanding cryogenic temperatures.

  • Food and Beverage Industry
For applications involving liquid nitrogen or other cryogenic liquids used in food processing and preservation.

  • Energy Sector
Storage and transport vessels for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other energy carriers operating at cryogenic temperatures.

The standard ensures vessels are reliable and safe to use in these high-risk environments by mitigating the risks associated with cryogenic fluid handling.

Related Standards

To ensure comprehensive compliance and harmonization, EN 14197-2 references and complements other critical standards:

  • EN 14197-1 - Specification of fluids applicable to cryogenic vessels and foundational for EN 14197-2 scopes.

  • ISO and IEC Standards on Safety and Equipment Performance
For example, IEC 60601-1-8 Amendment 1:2006, which details safety requirements and alarm systems for medical electrical equipment, ensuring protection mechanisms related to alarm conditions and inactivation states.

  • National and International Welding and Material Standards
Ensuring consistency in fabrication practices for cryogenic applications.

These related standards enrich the practical implementation of EN 14197-2 by embedding best practices in safety, design, and operational procedures.

By adhering to SIST EN 14197-2:2004/A1:2007, manufacturers and users of static non-vacuum insulated cryogenic vessels can ensure enhanced safety, durability, and regulatory compliance. This standard is essential for industries relying on the secure handling of cryogenic fluids under pressure, driving quality assurance and protection for personnel and equipment alike.
