Overview
EN 2713-003:2005 is a CEN aerospace product standard for screened (spiral) and jacketed, ink-jet printable electrical cables intended for on‑board aircraft electrical systems. It covers single- and multi‑core cables designed to operate between −55 °C and 200 °C, and defines construction, materials, marking, testing and quality requirements for cables that must accept ink‑jet and hot‑stamp identification in accordance with EN 3838.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and use: Single- and multi‑core (1 to 4 cores) cables for general purpose aircraft installations; filler cores are not permitted.
- Conductor and insulation: Cores comply with EN 2266-003; core top coat uses a dispersion fluorocarbon for ink‑jet compatibility.
- Screen: Nickel‑plated copper stranded spiral screen (dimensions referenced in the standard).
- Outer jacket: Polyimide jacket with nominal total wall thickness 30 µm, coated both sides with 2.5 µm fluorocarbon; a dispersion fluorocarbon top coat (≥15 µm) ensures ink‑jet marking acceptance. Winding/overlap options and acceptable overlaps are specified.
- Marking: Must be ink‑jet printable and also markable by hot stamp; markings to follow EN 3838 requirements for user‑applied cable identification.
- Required tests and performance: Test procedures reference EN 3475‑100 series and EN 2235. Key test requirements include:
- Electrical resistance per unit length and voltage/insulation tests
- Accelerated ageing and delamination/shrinkage (250 ± 5 °C for certain tests)
- Thermal endurance: 40 000 h at 200 °C
- Flammability: extinguishing time ≤ 3 s
- Notch propagation, plating continuity/thickness and adherence
- Specific mechanical and environmental tests as listed in Table 2 of the standard
- Designation and identification: Standard provides example designation format (e.g., “CABLE, ELECTRICAL EN2713-003 B 002 F”) and references EN 2713‑002 for colour coding and marking rules.
Applications and users
- Where used: Selection and procurement of on‑board aircraft wiring where high temperature endurance, electromagnetic screening and permanent legible marking are required (avionics wiring, harnesses, control circuits).
- Who uses it: Aerospace cable manufacturers, design engineers, procurement teams, quality/inspection personnel, harness assemblers, and certification/test laboratories involved in aircraft electrical systems.
