Overview

SIST EN 3475-505:2023 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines a method for determining the tensile properties of electrical conductors and strands used in aerospace applications. The standard applies to stranded conductors, single strands, solid conductors, and braids employed in aircraft electrical wiring systems. When necessary, this test method can also be utilized for insulated wires and cables after removal of insulation. SIST EN 3475-505:2023 is intended to be used together with EN 3475-100, ensuring consistent test methods throughout the aerospace sector.

This standard plays a critical role in maintaining the reliability and safety of electrical systems in aircraft by verifying that cables and conductors meet specific strength requirements under tensile loads.

Key Topics

  • Tensile Testing: Details the approach for evaluating the tensile strength, elongation, breaking load, and yield strength of various types of conductors.
  • Test Specimens: Specifies procedures for different conductor types:
    • Stranded conductors
    • Single strands or solid conductors
    • Braided conductors
  • Test Apparatus and Conditions:
    • Use of tensile testing machines with precise accuracy (1%)
    • Defined initial lengths and pulling speeds to ensure repeatable and reliable results
    • Requirements for specimen preparation such as removal of slack and correct jaw placement
  • Measurement and Reporting:
    • Guidelines on sample sizes
    • Calculation of average elongation, load, and tensile strength
    • Documentation of test outcomes
  • Compliance: Results must align with product-specific standards concerning elongation at break, maximum load, and tensile/yield strength.

Applications

SIST EN 3475-505:2023 is widely applicable in the aerospace industry, particularly for:

  • Aircraft Design and Certification: Ensures that electrical conductors and cables used in aircraft meet crucial mechanical strength criteria, enhancing safety and performance.
  • Quality Assurance and Production Testing: Enables aerospace manufacturers and suppliers to verify the tensile properties of their wire and cable products during production and qualification processes.
  • Maintenance and Repair Operations: Provides maintenance teams with clear methods for testing replacement wires and cables to confirm they match original performance requirements.
  • Product Development: Supports engineers in designing new lightweight, durable electrical conductors for aerospace applications, ensuring that innovations comply with stringent industry standards.

Related Standards

  • EN 3475-100: Aerospace series – Cables, electrical, aircraft use – Test methods – Part 100: General. EN 3475-505 refers to this general part for overarching requirements and definitions.
  • ISO and IEC standards: Terminology and definitions referenced in EN 3475-505 align with international standards maintained by ISO and IEC, ensuring harmonization across global aerospace and electrical engineering industries.
  • Previous Edition (EN 3475-505:2012): The 2023 version supersedes the 2012 edition, incorporating technical revisions to terms, testing methods, apparatus requirements, and measurement criteria for improved consistency.

Organizations engaged in the design, manufacturing, testing, and maintenance of aircraft electrical systems will benefit from adopting SIST EN 3475-505:2023 to ensure product reliability, airworthiness, and compliance with international aerospace standards. This standard is particularly relevant for ensuring the mechanical integrity and performance of aircraft electrical cables and their components.
