Overview

SIST EN 14435:2004 sets the minimum performance standards for self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus with half mask, designed exclusively for use with positive pressure. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and in alignment with European standard EN 14435:2004, this document details requirements, testing protocols, and marking guidelines for respiratory protective devices. The standard specifically excludes escape apparatus, diving apparatus, and equipment intended for fire fighting. It emphasizes laboratory and practical performance tests to ensure compliance.

This standard is essential for manufacturers, testing bodies, and users seeking assurance in the safety and suitability of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with half masks in industrial and hazardous environments.

Key Topics

  • Minimum Performance Requirements:
    • Specifies criteria for apparatus function, material strength, ergonomics, and user safety.
  • Design and Ergonomics:
    • Mandates robust construction, safe pressure vessel integration, and comfortable, adjustable harnesses.
    • Ensures components are free from sharp edges and allow quick donning/doffing.
  • Material and Construction:
    • Demands non-irritant materials, compatible with cleaning and disinfection routines, and resistance to heat.
    • Exposed parts must not use aluminium, magnesium, titanium, or their alloys.
  • Pressure Management:
    • Outlines requirements for pressure reducers, indicators, warning devices, vessels, and connector safety.
  • Testing and Practical Performance:
    • Sets guidelines for laboratory and real-world performance tests, including pressurization, flammability, and resistance to temperature extremes.
  • Marking and User Information:
    • Prescribes clear product labeling, pressure indicator standards, and essential manufacturer disclosures to guide safe usage.

Applications

Self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus with half mask and positive pressure design are critical in:

  • Industrial Maintenance:
    • Used in environments where respiratory hazards such as dust, gases, or vapors are present.
  • Chemical Processing:
    • Protects workers in plants and laboratories from chemical exposure.
  • Emergency Response (Non-Firefighting):
    • Supports operations in confined spaces, hazardous material handling, and technical rescue scenarios where air quality cannot be guaranteed.
  • Mining and Tunneling:
    • Provides vital respiratory protection against airborne contaminants in underground applications.

Compliance with SIST EN 14435:2004 ensures products are tested for durability, reliability, and user safety, instilling confidence in users operating within regulated environments.

Related Standards

For an integrated approach to respiratory protection, SIST EN 14435:2004 should be considered alongside these related standards:

  • EN 132: Definitions of terms and pictograms for respiratory protective devices
  • EN 140: Requirements, testing, and marking of half masks and quarter masks
  • EN 12021: Compressed air quality for breathing apparatus
  • EN 134: Component nomenclature for respiratory protective devices
  • EN 837-1: Pressure gauge requirements and calibration
  • EN 144-1 and EN 144-2: Gas cylinder valve connections
  • EN 13274 Series: Test methods for respiratory protective devices, including performance and flame tests
  • EN 61000-6-2: Electromagnetic compatibility requirements for industrial environments

Adhering to these standards supports comprehensive safety compliance, facilitates interoperability, and ensures alignment with European regulations on respiratory protective devices.
