Overview
SIST EN 14497:2004 is a European Standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It specifies a test method for determining the filtration stability of cementitious injection products intended for the protection and repair of concrete structures. This method is essential for ensuring that products used in concrete repair and protection can effectively penetrate fine cracks and voids without clogging, thus contributing to the long-term durability and stability of concrete infrastructures.
Key Topics
- Filtration Stability: Refers to the ability of a cementitious injection product to pass through constrictions in the flow path and enter cracks without agglomeration, preventing blockages during injection.
- Test Principle: The product is tested using a suction filtration device equipped with woven metal wire cloth of specified mesh sizes. The volume of the injection product that passes through the mesh is measured to assess stability.
- Mesh Sizes: The test is performed with various mesh sizes (32 µm to 125 µm) to simulate different crack widths and conditions in concrete structures.
- Testing Conditions: Standard conditions include specific temperature ranges and humidity, ensuring repeatability and comparability of results.
- Applicability: The test can also evaluate mixing stability, workable time, and suitability of mixing equipment under site-specific conditions.
Applications
SIST EN 14497:2004 is widely used by manufacturers, laboratories, and infrastructure maintenance professionals involved in concrete repair, refurbishment, and structural protection. Its applications include:
- Quality Control for Repair Products: Ensures that injection materials for concrete structures meet necessary criteria for penetrability and stability.
- Assessing Mixing Equipment: Provides a method for checking whether user-selected mixing equipment and procedures yield stable, effective grout.
- Site Verification: Enables in situ checking of filtration stability and workable time under real project conditions, including equipment, temperature, and mixing time.
- Product Development and Certification: Supports manufacturers in qualifying new products for market by complying with harmonized European standards in the building and construction industry.
- Structural Maintenance and Protection: Guides engineers and contractors in selecting suitable cementitious products for crack injection, waterproofing, or strengthening of critical concrete elements.
Related Standards
SIST EN 14497:2004 is part of a suite of standards focused on products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures. Relevant related standards include:
- EN 1504 Series:
- EN 1504-1: Definitions, requirements, quality control, and evaluation of conformity for products and systems used in repair and protection of concrete structures.
- EN 1504-5: Details requirements and test methods specifically for concrete injection products.
- ISO 565: Specifies nominal sizes for test sieves, referenced in the filtration stability test procedure for mesh sizing.
- Other CEN Standards: Additional CEN documents cover products, application methods, and maintenance procedures for concrete structure repair and protection.
By following SIST EN 14497:2004, stakeholders in construction and infrastructure sectors ensure the reliability and effectiveness of injection products, contributing to safer, longer-lasting concrete structures while meeting European regulatory requirements.
