Overview
SIST ETS 300 167 E1:2003 defines the functional characteristics of 2 048 kbit/s (2 Mbit/s) interfaces for transmission and multiplexing (TM) systems. This standard is essential for ensuring compatibility and interoperability of telecommunications equipment across different vendors and operators, focusing specifically on synchronous frame structures and alignment, as well as Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) procedures. The standard aligns closely with the relevant parts of ITU-T Recommendations G.704 and G.706, particularly those aspects that relate to 2 Mbit/s interfaces and frame structures.
Key Topics
- Synchronous Frame Structures: Specifies the organization and structure of 2 048 kbit/s signals, including both basic frames and octet-structured frames.
- Frame Alignment: Describes procedures for maintaining and recovering frame alignment for reliable data transmission across digital interfaces.
- Time Slot 0 Usage: Outlines the allocation and use of bits in time slot 0 (TS0), which is critical for signalling, synchronization, and alarm indication.
- Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) Procedures: Details the CRC-4 procedures used for error detection and performance monitoring within the 2 Mbit/s frame.
- Normative and Informative References: Clarifies mandatory versus advisory requirements, following the conventions from G.704 and G.706.
- Inter-vendor and Inter-operator Compatibility: Promotes seamless connectivity and interoperability between equipment from different manufacturers, a key requirement in European and global transmission networks.
Applications
The functional characteristics defined in SIST ETS 300 167 E1:2003 are fundamental to a wide range of digital telecommunication applications:
- Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN): Supports primary rate access for voice and data in TDM-based telephone networks.
- ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI): Used in Integrated Services Digital Networks for multi-channel voice and data transmission.
- Transmission Equipment: Guides the development and certification of multiplexers, cross-connects, and add/drop multiplexers using 2 Mbit/s interfaces.
- Interconnection between Operators: Ensures reliable and standardized communication links between different service providers and network infrastructures.
- Performance Monitoring: Enables enhanced network management through CRC-4 based error detection and performance assessment in digital transmission systems.
- Migration and Interworking: Facilitates co-existence and transition between legacy E1 systems and next-generation network components due to its foundation on widely-adopted standards.
Related Standards
- ITU-T G.704: Synchronous frame structures used at primary and secondary hierarchical levels.
- ITU-T G.706: Frame alignment and CRC procedures relevant to G.704 frame structures.
- SIST ETS 300 011: Related ETSI standard for the physical and electrical characteristics of 2 Mbit/s interfaces.
- EN 300 166: ETSI standard that addresses multiplexing and de-multiplexing equipment at 2 048 kbit/s.
- IEC 60950 / EN 60950: Safety standards applicable to telecommunications equipment.
- IEEE 802.3: For Ethernet interconnections, which may interface with legacy E1 systems in hybrid environments.

Foreword
This European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) has been produced by the Transmission and
Multiplexing (TM) Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
This ETS aims at providing inter-vendor and inter-operator compatibility for synchronous frame structures
based on CCITT Recommendations G.704 [1] used at primary hierarchical levels and G.706 [2] on frame
alignment and Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) procedures relating to basic frame structures defined in
CCITT Recommendation G.704 [1].
The conformance testing requirements corresponding to the specifications contained in this ETS are to be
specified in a different ETS.
