Overview

SIST ES 202 504-8 V1.1.1:2008 specifies the Parlay X Terminal Status Web Service interface, part of the Open Service Access (OSA) and Parlay X 3 Web Services standards. Developed in alignment with the requirements from EG 201 988-4 and 3GPP TS 29.199 Release 7, this standard enables applications to access terminal status information within telecommunication networks via standardized APIs. By offering an open, flexible interface for service providers and application developers, it helps facilitate the development of network-aware applications that dynamically respond to device status changes.

Key Topics

  • Terminal Status Queries: The standard defines how applications can request the status (reachable, unreachable, or busy) for a single terminal or group of terminals. It supports both immediate queries and group checks, with mechanisms to handle partial results and retrieval errors.
  • Notification Services: Applications can subscribe to notifications for terminal status changes. Flexible notification options include defining the number of alerts, frequency, and duration, as well as immediate status checks to handle “call when available” scenarios.
  • Interfaces and Methods: The specification details the structure and operations of three main interfaces:
    • TerminalStatus: For querying the status of terminals.
    • TerminalStatusNotificationManager: For configuring status change notifications.
    • TerminalNotification: For receiving notifications when device status changes.
  • Service Policies: Rules for notifications (e.g., limits on frequency, number of notifications, support for groups) are standardized to ensure predictable and secure interaction.
  • Namespaces and WSDL Integration: The service interfaces and data types are defined using XML Schema and described through WSDL, enabling interoperability and integration with a wide range of development environments.
  • Error Handling: Comprehensive fault and policy exception management ensures robust operation, with detailed error codes and handling strategies.

Applications

The Terminal Status Web Service standard provides practical benefits in the following scenarios:

  • Presence-Enabled Services: Determine if a user's device is reachable to optimize communication workflows, such as messaging or call routing.
  • Dynamic Call Handling: Applications can monitor status and automatically initiate calls or alerts when users become available, improving customer engagement and reducing failed connection attempts.
  • Enterprise Communication Platforms: Integrate real-time device awareness into contact centers and collaboration tools for efficient workforce management and customer service.
  • Mobile Network Operations: Support network management systems in tracking terminal availability status and automating notifications for service quality or support alerts.
  • IoT Device Monitoring: Track connectivity and operational status of terminals in Internet of Things deployments, providing a foundation for proactive maintenance and alerting services.

By exposing uniform, secure, and feature-rich APIs, the standard empowers telecom operators, service providers, and third-party developers to deliver reliable, interactive, and responsive network applications.

Related Standards

Several standards support or complement SIST ES 202 504-8 V1.1.1:2008:

  • SIST ES 202 504-1: Parlay X Web Services - Common: Base definitions and common types used across Parlay X services.
  • 3GPP TS 29.199: Reference specification from 3GPP for OSA/Parlay X web services.
  • Other Parlay X Parts: Standardized APIs for third-party call control, call notification, messaging, payment, account management, terminal location, and more.
  • W3C XML Schema (XSD): Schema language for describing data types exchanged via the web services.
  • ETSI EG 201 988-4: Requirements for OSA/Parlay X service definitions.

Summary

SIST ES 202 504-8 V1.1.1:2008 is a key component of the Parlay X Web Services framework, providing the industry with standardized methods to obtain and act on terminal status information. It streamlines the integration of network functionality into diverse applications, facilitating innovation, interoperability, and improved end-user experiences in today’s telecommunications environment.

4 Detailed service description
Terminal Status provides access to the status of a terminal through:
• Request for the status of a terminal.
• Request for the status of a group of terminals.
• Notification of a change in the status of a terminal.
The status of a terminal can be expressed as reachable, unreachable or busy - however not all terminals distinguish a
busy status, so applications should be able to adapt to what information is available (using the service properties to
determine available information).
When a request for a group of terminals is made, the response may contain a full or partial set of results. This allows the
service to provide results based on a number of criteria including number of terminals for which the request is made and
amount of time required to retrieve the information. This allows the requester to initiate additional requests for those
terminals for which information was not provided.
