Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures - Test methods - Part 1: Determination of linear shrinkage for polymers and surface protection systems (SPS)

This European Standard is one of a series dealing with products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structure. It specifies a method for determining the linear shrinkage of solvent free multicomponent cold curing reactive resins.  The method is not suitable for rubber elastic and very fast curing products.

Overview

SIST EN 12617-1:2003 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a method for determining the linear shrinkage of solvent-free multicomponent cold curing reactive resins. These materials are widely used within products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures, including various surface protection systems (SPS). The standard outlines procedures that ensure consistent testing and reliable comparison of products, crucial for guaranteeing the long-term durability and performance of repairs and protective coatings on concrete.

This standard forms part of a series related to concrete repair and protection products, helping align practices across Europe and providing manufacturers, designers, and contractors with a unified approach to product characterization.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability: The method described in SIST EN 12617-1:2003 is designed for solvent-free, multicomponent cold curing resins and surface protection systems applied to concrete. It is not suitable for rubber, elastic materials, or very fast curing products due to their different physical behaviors under testing.
  • Test Procedure: The standard includes detailed instructions for sampling, mixing, and curing the test materials, followed by measurements to determine the linear shrinkage after defined storage conditions.
  • Measurement and Reporting: Results are calculated by comparing the cured length of the test sample to its original length, ensuring results are precise and repeatable. The standard specifies the information that must be included in the test report, such as material identification, test conditions, and results.
  • Normative References: SIST EN 12617-1:2003 references other important standards, including EN 1504-1 (definitions and quality control for concrete repair products), EN ISO 15528 (sampling of paints and varnishes), and EN ISO 1513 (sample preparation for testing).

Applications

  • Selection of Protective Coatings: Testing linear shrinkage is essential when choosing reactive resins or surface protection systems for concrete, as excessive shrinkage can lead to cracking, loss of adhesion, and premature failure.
  • Quality Assurance and Product Comparison: Manufacturers and suppliers use this method to demonstrate compliance and consistency in resin formulations, offering transparency in performance to specifiers and end users.
  • Product Certification and Regulatory Compliance: SIST EN 12617-1:2003 supports product certification schemes and helps ensure compliance with European and national regulations related to structural repairs and surface protection in construction projects.
  • Contract Administration: Project managers and quality inspectors reference this standard during acceptance testing, ensuring that products delivered and applied on site meet specified performance criteria.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to protective and repair systems for concrete structures, the following standards are closely related to SIST EN 12617-1:2003:

  • EN 12617-2: Determination of shrinkage of polymers for injection products (volumetric shrinkage test).
  • EN 12617-3: Determination of early age linear shrinkage for structural bonding agents.
  • EN 12617-4: Testing for shrinkage and expansion of relevant products.
  • EN 1504-1: Definitions, requirements, quality control, and evaluation of conformity for products and systems used in the protection and repair of concrete structures.
  • EN ISO 15528 and EN ISO 1513: Procedures for sampling and preparation of samples for testing paints, varnishes, and similar products.

Adherence to SIST EN 12617-1:2003 ensures confidence in the durability and effectiveness of polymer-based surface protection systems, reinforcing best practices in the field of concrete repair and protection across Europe.
