Overview
EN 6059-406:2014 - "Aerospace series - Electrical cables, installation - Protection sleeves - Test methods - Part 406: Vibration" specifies the test procedure and means to verify vibration resistance of protection sleeves used on electrical cables and cable bundles in aerospace applications. Intended to be used together with EN 6059-100, this European Standard defines specimen preparation, test set‑ups, apparatus, three vibration test methods (A, B, C) and acceptance requirements to ensure sleeve integrity under aircraft vibration environments.
Key topics and technical requirements
Scope and specimens
- Applies to protection sleeves installed on electrical cables (24 AWG to 18 AWG) compliant with EN 2266-004, EN 2267-010 or EN 3838.
- Typical test sample uses EN 2267-010 size 006 (20 AWG) cable; bundle diameter shall be 75–85% of sleeve inner diameter.
- Use metal cushion cable clamps (AS 23190, MS 21919E or MIL‑DTL‑85052B) for mounting.
Apparatus and set‑ups
- Three test set‑ups (01, 02, 03) are provided; samples must not contact the vibration device (minimum 5 mm clearance).
- Aerospace brackets, spacers and clamps specified to maintain installation geometry.
Test methods
- Test methods are independent of set‑up and reference ISO 7137 vibration procedures.
- Method A (default): random vibration curve C for 6 h on X and 6 h on Z, followed by curve C1 under same conditions (ambient 20 ± 5 °C).
- Method B (alternative): curve C for 3 h on X and 3 h on Y, then curve C1; additional checks for internal/external protection and broken strands.
- Method C (alternative): curve E for 3 h on X and 3 h on Y, then curve E1; similar enhanced checks as Method B.
Pass/fail criteria
- After each cycle, inspect sleeve ends, straight and elbow sections, and at clamps.
- No visible damage to cable insulation (wear, cracks, distortion). For Methods B and C, also verify no broken strands and no internal/external holes or distortions.
Applications
- Ensures durability and mechanical integrity of protection sleeves used in aircraft wiring harnesses exposed to engine, airframe and equipment vibration.
- Used during product qualification, production verification and supplier assessment for aerospace OEMs and system integrators.
- Useful for harness designers, test laboratories, quality engineers and regulatory/compliance teams validating vibration resistance of cable protection systems.
Who should use this standard
- Aerospace manufacturers, electrical harness suppliers, environmental test labs and procurement/quality engineers who need standardized, repeatable vibration test methods for protection sleeves used on aircraft electrical installations.
