General Information

Abstract

This ETR supplements ETS 300 468 which describes Service Information (SI) to be used for Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) systems.  This ETR identifies the SI codes allocated for DVB systems. Four sets of code values are identified:  - Network-id used to identify a network; - Bouquet_id used to identify a bouquet; - Conditional Access (CA)_id used to identified the kind of encryption used; - Country code used to identify a country or region.

Overview

SIST-TP ETR 162 E1:2005 is a Slovenian standard focused on the management of Service Information (SI) codes within Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) systems. Prepared in alignment with ETR 162 and as a supplement to ETS 300 468, this document specifies how essential SI codes are allocated to ensure efficient digital broadcasting for television, sound, and data services. The standard supports industry interoperability by identifying key code values such as network IDs, bouquet IDs, conditional access IDs (CA_system_id), and country codes, which are required for proper network, service, and encryption identification in DVB environments.

Key Topics

  • Service Information (SI) Codes: Defines unique code sets necessary for recognizing networks, service groups (bouquets), encryption methods, and geographical regions within DVB transmissions.
  • Network Identification: Assigns a network_id to each broadcasting network, aiding system management and receiver functionality.
  • Bouquet Identification: Uses bouquet_id to distinguish groups of services offered as a package, enabling operators to organize and distribute channels effectively.
  • Conditional Access System (CA) Identification: Allocates CA_system_id values to indicate the specific type of encryption or access control system in use, vital for managing subscription and content protection.
  • Country and Region Codes: Ensures services are correctly associated with their intended countries or regions per DVB requirements, supplementing ISO 3166 where needed.
  • Private Data Specifier: Supports extensibility through private SI codes, allowing operators to specify additional proprietary information.

Applications

The allocation and standardized structure of SI codes underpin several practical applications in digital broadcasting:

  • DVB Network Operation: Provides broadcasters and network operators with a standardized set of identifiers for easier network management and cross-system compatibility.
  • Receiver Configuration: Sets a fundamental framework for digital TV receivers, set-top boxes, and integrated digital TVs to accurately scan, organize, and present available services to end users.
  • Conditional Access Management: Assists operators in controlling access to content through standardized identification of encryption systems, improving security and license management.
  • Channel Grouping and Electronic Program Guides (EPG): Enables efficient grouping of channels and bouquets for organization in program guides, enhancing the viewer experience.
  • International Service Delivery: Facilitates accurate mapping and delivery of services across borders, ensuring content is distributed to the correct regional markets.

Related Standards

This standard builds on and interacts with several key industry documents and standards:

  • ETS 300 468: “Digital broadcasting systems for television, sound and data services; Specification for Service Information (SI) in Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) systems” - the foundation for SI implementation.
  • ISO 3166: Country and region code standard, supplemented by specific code values in this document to address unique broadcasting requirements.
  • Other DVB Standards: Including relevant specifications by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), supporting the comprehensive DVB system architecture.

Practical Value

By using the SI codes defined in SIST-TP ETR 162 E1:2005, DVB operators, broadcasters, and equipment manufacturers can:

  • Ensure interoperability and system compatibility among diverse DVB products and networks.
  • Facilitate the secure and reliable operation of digital broadcasting platforms.
  • Enhance service availability and accessibility for consumers across national and regional boundaries.
  • Support future upgrades and expansions in digital broadcasting, thanks to its extensible identification framework.

This makes SIST-TP ETR 162 E1:2005 an essential reference for all organizations and professionals involved in digital broadcasting and DVB systems.
