Overview
SIST EN ISO 10666:2001 specifies the mechanical and functional properties of drilling screws with a tapping screw thread. These specialized fasteners are designed with a drilling point, enabling them to automatically drill a core hole and form the mating thread in materials such as sheet metal during assembly. This European Standard aligns with ISO 10666:1999 and is crucial for industries requiring reliable self-drilling and self-tapping fasteners, ensuring consistent quality and performance.
Key Topics
- Material Properties: Drilling screws must be manufactured from case-hardening steel or heat-treatable steel to guarantee the necessary hardness and durability after heat treatment.
- Metallurgical Characteristics: Critical aspects include:
- Surface hardness: Minimum requirements for Vickers hardness after heat treatment
- Core hardness: Precise hardness values according to thread size
- Case depth: Defined case hardening depth limits for various screw sizes
- Microstructure: Absence of ferrite streaks between the surface and core post-treatment
- Hydrogen embrittlement: Precautionary steps, particularly for electroplated screws, in line with ISO 4042 and ISO 15330, to reduce risk of embrittlement
- Mechanical Performance:
- Core hole drilling capability: The screw’s point must efficiently drill core holes under specified test conditions
- Thread forming capability: Screws must create a precise female thread without deforming their own threading
- Torsional strength: Defined minimum torque values ensure resistance to failure during installation
- Testing Procedures:
- Rigorous testing methods for hardness, case depth, core hardness, and torsional strength, often employing the Vickers hardness test (per ISO 6507-1)
- Standardized mechanical tests to verify drilling and thread-forming functionality in controlled conditions
Applications
Drilling screws with tapping screw threads are essential in sectors where efficient assembly and secure fastening to thin substrates are necessary. Typical applications include:
- Construction and Metal Fabrication: Fastening sheet metal components, steel structures, and facade elements without pre-drilling
- Automotive Manufacturing: Assemblies that require strong, permanent joints directly into metal frames or panels
- Electrical Enclosures: Rapid installation of panels and cable trays where consistent mechanical properties are critical
- HVAC Systems: Securing ducts and housings with minimal need for pilot holes
- General Manufacturing: Versatile use in appliance assembly, shelving, and machinery, particularly where repetitive, reliable drilling and thread-forming are crucial
Implementing SIST EN ISO 10666:2001 increases reliability, reduces installation time, and ensures a high degree of joint integrity, especially in applications subject to dynamic loads or vibrations.
Related Standards
For comprehensive quality assurance and compatibility, SIST EN ISO 10666:2001 references several key international standards:
- ISO 1478:1999 - Tapping screw thread specifications, providing the fundamental geometry for threads used in drilling screws
- ISO 4042:1999 - Electroplated coatings on fasteners, with guidelines to minimize hydrogen embrittlement risk

- ISO 15330:1999 - Preloading test for fasteners, specifically aimed at detecting hydrogen embrittlement via mechanical testing
These related standards ensure a robust approach to mechanical, functional, and safety requirements for drilling screws.
SIST EN ISO 10666:2001 stands as a key standard within the fastener and construction industry, harmonizing mechanical and functional requirements to promote safety, quality, and interoperability in self-drilling and self-tapping screws. By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and users can ensure their products meet rigorous reliability and performance benchmarks.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 10666 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners.

Drilling screws with tapping screw thread — Mechanical
and functional properties
1 Scope
This International Standard specifies the properties of heat treated screws with a tapping screw thread in
accordance with ISO 1478, and which are designed with a drilling point which automatically drills the core hole for
the screw during assembly. Such screws then automatically form the mating screw thread, either in a non-cutting or
in a cutting operation, with the aid of the threaded portion of the screw adjoining the drilling point.
The purpose of this International Standard is to ensure that the screws are able to drill their core hole and form their
mating screw thread without becoming distorted or fracturing in the process, provided that no overstressing has
occurred. Consequently the following characteristics are regarded as representing the most important aspects for
the assessment of the mechanical and operational characteristics of a drilling screw:
surface hardness;
capability of core hole drilling and forming of the mating female screw thread;
torsional strength.
