Overview
ISO 24975:2026 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that establishes uniform methods for measuring the dimensions of beds and mattresses intended for adult use. The document details measurement techniques and provides recommended tolerances for various bed components, including mattresses, bed frames, divans, and bed bases. The purpose of the standard is to ensure compatibility and correct fit between different bed elements, supporting manufacturers, retailers, and consumers in achieving consistent and reliable product dimensions across the global furniture industry. This standard does not cover air beds, water beds, mattress pads, or bed bases for bunk and high beds.
Key Topics
- Scope of Measurement: Defines procedures for determining external and internal dimensions of mattresses, bed frames, divans, and bed bases meant for adults.
- Test Conditions: Specifies requirements for the preparation, assembly, and testing environments to ensure accuracy and repeatability.
- Equipment: Outlines apparatus required, such as support surfaces, loading pads, and measurement tools, to standardize measurement methods.
- Measurement Methods: Details step-by-step instructions for measuring length, width, and height of furniture components through defined points and forces.
- Recommended Tolerances: Provides guidance on allowable dimensional deviations from nominal specifications to facilitate proper fitting between products.
- Reporting Requirements: Lists mandatory elements for comprehensive and transparent test reports, supporting quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
Applications
ISO 24975:2026 delivers practical value across several segments of the furniture and bedding industry:
- Manufacturers: By following standardized measurement methods and tolerances, manufacturers can ensure consistency in product dimensions, facilitating easier mass production and quality control.
- Retailers: The standard enables retailers to compare products from different suppliers with confidence, reducing fitting issues and product returns.
- Designers and Specifiers: Ensures that design intent translates into physically compatible components, preventing misalignment issues in assembled beds.
- Testing Laboratories: Promotes robust, repeatable testing procedures that underpin product certification and verification processes.
- Consumers: Drives higher satisfaction by facilitating beds and mattresses that fit together correctly, resulting in improved product usability.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports adherence to national and international regulations by laying out transparent measurement and reporting protocols.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive approach to furniture quality and safety, the following standards are commonly referenced alongside ISO 24975:2026:
- ISO 19833 - Furniture - Beds - Test methods for the determination of strength, durability, and stability
- ISO 7170 - Furniture - Storage units - Determination of strength and durability
- EN 1957 - Furniture - Beds and mattresses - Test methods for determination of functional characteristics and assessment criteria
- ISO 21015 - Furniture - Beds - Test methods for the determination of stability, strength, and durability
These related standards help address additional aspects such as the mechanical performance, safety, and durability of beds and associated components.
By implementing ISO 24975:2026 - Furniture - Beds and mattresses - Methods of measurement and recommended tolerances, stakeholders across the furniture supply chain can ensure compatibility, product reliability, and consumer satisfaction through clear, consistent, and internationally recognized measurement practices.
