Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be rep-
resented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an Inter-
national Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member
bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 2806 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISOfK 184, Industrial automation Systems and integration, Su bcom-
mittee SC 1, fhysical device control.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 2806:1980).
The following revisions have been made:
- the contents have been restructured into more logical subclauses;
- out-of-date terms and definitions have been deleted;
- a number of terms and definitions have been revised;
new terms and definitions have been added;
an informative annex has been added;
- the entries have been renumbered as a consequence of the a bove
changes.

Avant-propos
L ’ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une federation
mondiale d ’organismes nationaux de normalisation (comites membres
de I ’ISO). L ’elaboration des Normes internationales est en general confiee
aux comites techniques de I ’ISO. Chaque comite membre interesse par
une etude a Ie droit de faire Partie du comite technique cr& a cet effet.
Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouver-
nementales, en iiaison avec I ’ISO patticipent egalement aux travaux.
L ’ISO collabore etroitement avec Ia Commission electrotechnique inter-
nationale (GEI) en ce qui concerne Ia normalisation electrotechnique.
Les projets de Normes internationales adoptes par les comites techni-
ques sont soumis aux comites membres pour vote. Leur publication
comme Normes internationales requiert I ’approbation de 75 % au moins
des comites membres votants.
La Norme internationale ISO 2806 a etc elaboree par Ie comite technique
ISOfK 184, Systemes d ’automatisation industrielle et inttigration, sous-
comite SC 1, Ensemble de commande pour /es kquipements.
Cette deuxieme edition annule et remplace Ia Premiere edition
(ISO 2806:1980). Les revisions suivantes ont etc apportees:
- Ie contenu a etc restructure avec des paragraphes plus logiques;
- les termes et definitions obsoletes ont etc supprimes;
- de nouveaux termes et definitions ont etc ajoutes;
- une annexe informative a etc ajoutee;
- les entrees ont etc renumerotees en consequence des changements
mentionnes ci-dessus.
