Overview
IEC 62548-1:2023/AMD1:2025 introduces key amendments to Part 1 of IEC 62548, focusing on the design requirements for photovoltaic (PV) arrays. This amendment, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), updates essential terminology, clarifies definitions, and refines testing and safety requirements for PV array design. The standard supports international harmonization of PV array installation, operation, and maintenance, fostering improved safety, performance, and reliability in solar photovoltaic systems.
Ensuring compliance with IEC 62548-1 and its amendments is critical for manufacturers, designers, installers, and certification bodies involved in the photovoltaic sector. The latest changes contribute to the evolution of best practices in PV array design worldwide.
Key Topics
IEC 62548-1:2023/AMD1:2025 addresses several core topics relevant to the safe and efficient design of photovoltaic arrays:
Updated Terminology and Definitions
- Clarifications and updates, such as replacing “PV array main cable” with “PV array cable” and refining terms involving string cables and combiner boxes.
- New terms added, including definitions for “inverter,” “PV cell,” and “simultaneously accessible conductive parts,” ensuring more precise communication within the industry.
Normative References
- Incorporation of additional references to related standards for PV module testing, potential-induced degradation, bypass diode testing, and module type approval.
Design and Safety Requirements
- Clarifications on PV system topologies, circuit protection, and device selection.
- Updated practices for bypass diode installation and qualification to ensure robust protection against overcurrent and thermal issues.
Testing and Qualification Procedures
- Enhanced guidance on testing for potential-induced degradation, module retesting, and bypass diode evaluations to support high system reliability.
Wiring and EMC Considerations
- New requirements to minimize wiring loop areas, thereby reducing the risk of transient overvoltage and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) interference with other systems.
Connector and Protection Requirements
- Emphasis on protection of unmated connectors against dust and moisture ingress, tailored to the installation environment.
Applications
The amendments of IEC 62548-1 are applicable throughout the life cycle of photovoltaic arrays, including design, installation, maintenance, and assessment. Key practical applications include:
PV Array Design
- Ensuring compliance with latest international best practices for layout, safety, and electrical integration of PV modules.
- Selection and implementation of appropriate cables, connectors, and protective devices to optimize system safety and durability.
Testing and Certification
- Assisting manufacturers and quality assurance teams in selecting relevant test methods and understanding requirements for module qualification, degradation assessment, and bypass diode verification.
PV System Installation
- Providing installers and engineers with clear guidance on wiring practices, system isolation means, and environmental protection measures for electrical components.
Inspection and Maintenance
- Establishing benchmarks for ongoing system performance verification, diagnosis, and documentation of PV array configurations.
Related Standards
IEC 62548-1:2023/AMD1:2025 references several other key standards to ensure comprehensive PV system evaluation:
- IEC TS 62804-2: Test methods for detection of potential-induced degradation in thin-film PV modules.
- IEC TS 62915: Procedures and requirements for PV module type approval, retesting, and design qualification.
- IEC TS 62916: Test methods for bypass diode electrostatic discharge susceptibility in PV modules.
- IEC 62979: Thermal runaway test methods for bypass diodes in PV modules.
Other relevant standards include modules on general PV system safety, wiring and installation (IEC 60364 series), and conformity assessment protocols for electrical installations.
IEC 62548-1:2023/AMD1:2025 is essential for anyone working with PV array design and installation, helping ensure systems are safe, reliable, and aligned with the latest international requirements in photovoltaic technology.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
