Overview
IEC 60335-2-30:2009/AMD2:2021 is Amendment 2 to the international safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances, focusing specifically on room heaters. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment updates safety requirements to ensure the continued protection of users and installers. It addresses construction, performance, and testing of electric room heaters for both residential and comparable environments, emphasizing safe operation and reliability.
This amendment is a critical reference for manufacturers, certification bodies, testing laboratories, and regulatory authorities involved in the design, production, and approval of electric room heaters, supporting compliance with the latest international safety practices.
Key Topics
- Updated Surface Temperature Testing: Amendment 2 introduces changes to how accessible surface temperatures on room heaters are tested and measured. It specifies the use of a standardized test probe with defined application force and duration to ensure repeatable results.
- Temperature Rise Limits: The amendment includes revised temperature rise limits for various materials and heater types. New criteria address grills, handles, and other accessible components, helping minimize burn hazards.
- Outdoor Heater Cords: Enhanced requirements for supply cords used with heaters intended for outdoor operation, specifying suitable sheathing and mechanical strength for environmental protection.
- Normative References: The amendment incorporates new references, such as IEC 60584-1 for thermocouples, supporting accurate temperature measurement protocols.
- Application of Test Probes: Clarification is given on where and how temperature measurements are performed, as well as details about the types and characteristics of test probes used during safety assessments.
Applications
IEC 60335-2-30:2009/AMD2:2021 is applied by:
- Manufacturers: Ensuring electric room heaters meet updated safety limits, especially concerning surface temperatures and electrical safety, before product release or certification.
- Testing Laboratories: Following the specified test methods and probe designs to verify that room heaters comply with the latest safety requirements.
- Regulatory Authorities: Using the standard to evaluate and approve heaters for market access, ensuring consumer safety and harmonization with international norms.
- Product Designers and Engineers: Integrating safety requirements into product development to avoid costly redesigns and support successful certification.
The amendment is relevant for room heaters installed in various environments, including households, offices, hotels, and similar spaces. Compliance with IEC 60335-2-30 (and its amendments) is often required for CE marking and access to global markets.

11.3 Add the following text to the addition:
Where the external accessible surfaces are suitably flat and access permits, then the test
probe of Figure 104 is used to measure the temperature rises of external accessible surfaces
specified in Table 101. The probe is applied with a force of 4 N ± 1 N to the surface in such a
way that the best possible contact between the probe and the surface is ensured. The
measurement is performed after a contact period of 30 s.
The probe may be held in place using a laboratory stand clamp or similar device. Any measuring
instrument giving the same results as the probe may be used.

During the test, the temperature rises are monitored continuously and shall not exceed the
values shown in Table 3 and Table 101.
Addition:"
Replace the fourth paragraph of the test specification in the existing addition by the following.
The temperature rise of handles or grips of vents and air shutters shall not exceed the value
specified in Table 3 for surfaces of handles, knobs, grips and similar parts which are held for
short periods only in normal use.
Replace, in the fifth paragraph of the test specification in the existing addition, “test rod” by
“75 mm diameter test probe in Table 101”.
