Overview

IEC 63241-2-5:2024 defines the particular requirements for measuring dust generated by hand-held circular saws. As part of the IEC 63241 series, this international standard supplements IEC 63241-1, which outlines general dust measurement procedures for electric motor-operated tools. The aim is to ensure a harmonized and reliable method for determining dust emission during typical circular saw operation, supporting global safety, health, and regulatory compliance in woodworking and construction sectors.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Relevance

    • Applies to electric motor-operated hand-held circular saws designed for cutting materials such as wood and engineered panels.
    • Supplements and modifies IEC 63241-1 clauses to address unique aspects of circular saws, including test conditions and operational requirements.
  • Test Procedure

    • Details specific testing conditions for circular saws intended to cut wood, including the use of particleboard and defined cutting parameters.
    • Emphasizes consistent test set-up, operator positioning, use of saw blade types, and feed force to ensure repeatability and comparability of dust emission data.
  • Reporting and Compliance

    • Outlines requirements for documenting testing parameters, such as cycle times and number of cuts achieved within a set time period.
    • Aligns with global occupational health concerns by standardizing how dust exposure is quantified and reported for these tools.

Applications

IEC 63241-2-5:2024 is highly relevant for:

  • Manufacturers of hand-held circular saws

    • Demonstrating compliance with international dust emission safety standards
    • Supporting product certification and market access in various regions
  • Testing Laboratories and Certification Bodies

    • Performing standardized dust emissions testing according to globally recognized procedures
    • Ensuring reliability and reproducibility in reporting results for regulatory or customer requirements
  • Workplace Safety Professionals

    • Assessing and mitigating dust-related hazards in construction sites, woodworking workshops, and manufacturing environments
    • Specifying appropriate dust control measures based on consistent and comparable emission data
  • Regulatory Authorities

    • Citing this IEC standard in national or local health and safety guidelines
    • Facilitating harmonization of product safety requirements across jurisdictions

Related Standards

To ensure complete and consistent conformity, IEC 63241-2-5:2024 should be used in conjunction with:

  • IEC 63241-1:2023: General requirements for dust measurement in electric motor-operated tools.
  • ISO 16893: Wood-based panels - Particleboards, referenced for material specifications in test procedures.
  • ANSI A208.1: Particleboard specifications used in North America.
  • EN 312: European specifications for particleboards.
  • Additional regional or application-specific occupational health standards concerning airborne dust exposure.

Practical Value

  • Supporting Health and Safety: By enabling accurate, repeatable measurement of airborne dust from hand-held circular saws, this standard helps minimize operators' exposure to inhalable particulates and related health risks.
  • Facilitating Regulatory Compliance: The standardized method simplifies meeting documentation requirements for various international markets.
  • Promoting Product Improvement: Enables manufacturers to benchmark products and innovate for lower emissions, enhancing workplace safety and machine performance.

Adopting IEC 63241-2-5:2024 ensures alignment with international best practices for dust measurement and supports a safer working environment in woodworking and construction industries.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
