Overview
IEC 60332-1-2:2004/AMD1:2015 is an international amendment that updates the test procedure for evaluating the flame propagation characteristics of electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions. Prepared by IEC Technical Committee 20, this amendment focuses on vertical flame propagation testing of a single insulated wire or cable using a 1 kW pre-mixed flame. This standard plays a critical role in fire safety by specifying consistent methods to assess cable performance under fire exposure, helping manufacturers and regulators ensure safer electric and fibre optic installations.
Key Topics
- Test Sample Preparation: Specifies a sample length of (600 ± 25) mm for a single insulated wire or cable. The diameter is measured at three points using IEC 60811-203 and rounded according to defined rules for accurate determination.
- Test Setup: Outlines precise positioning of the test piece within a metal enclosure as described in IEC 60332-1-1. The test piece must be vertically aligned, with strict distances maintained for consistency.
- Flame Application Procedure: Describes required burner settings and how the burner should be positioned. For example, the burner’s blue cone must contact the specimen 475 ± 5 mm from the upper support at a 45 ± 2° angle.
- Measurement and Rounding Method: Details the method for averaging diameter measurements and applying rounding, which is critical for determining flame application times.
- Specifics for Non-Circular Cables: Adjusts calculation rules for non-circular cables based on their geometric ratios, to ensure relevant and comparable test results.
- References and Vocabulary: Aligns key terms and definitions with ISO 13943:2008 for fire safety, supporting harmonized terminology across standards.
Applications
IEC 60332-1-2:2004/AMD1:2015 is crucial for:
- Cable Manufacturers: Assists in designing and testing cables to meet stringent fire safety requirements, particularly for use in buildings, transportation, and critical infrastructure.
- Testing Laboratories: Provides accredited labs with clear procedures for vertical flame propagation testing, ensuring reliable and internationally recognized results.
- Building and Product Certification: Used by regulatory bodies and certification organizations to confirm that cable products meet recognized fire performance benchmarks.
- Fire Safety Assessments: Enhances overall safety planning and risk assessment for electrical and data cabling in various installations, reducing the risk of flame spread in fire incidents.
- Procurement and Specification: Enables project engineers and specifiers to reference international standards for cable fire performance when procuring compliant products.

5.1 Sample
Replace the existing subclause by the following new subclause:
The test sample shall be a piece of single insulated conductor or cable (600 ± 25) mm long.
The test sample diameter shall be measured using the method given in IEC 60811-203. The
measurement shall be made at each of three places, separated by at least 100 mm.
© IEC 2015
The average of the three values obtained shall be rounded to obtain the overall diameter. If
the calculation gives 5 or more for the second decimal figure, raise the first to the next
number; thus, for example, 5,75 is rounded to 5,8. If the calculation gives 4 or less for the
second decimal figure, maintain the first number; thus, for example, 5,74 is rounded to 5,7.
The overall diameter obtained shall be used for the selection of the time for flame application.
5.3 Positioning of test piece
Replace the existing subclause by the following new subclause:
The test piece shall be straightened and secured to two horizontal supports by means of a
suitable size of copper wire, in a vertical position in the centre of the metal enclosure, as
described in IEC 60332-1-1, so that the distance between the bottom of the upper support and
the top of the lower support is (550 ± 5) mm. In addition, the test piece shall be positioned so
that the bottom of the specimen is approximately 50 mm from the base of the enclosure (see
Figure 1).
