Overview

IEC 63241-2-11:2024 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies particular requirements for dust measurement procedures specifically for hand-held reciprocating saws, including both jig saws and sabre saws. This standard is part of the IEC 63241 series, which covers dust measurement procedures for electric motor-operated tools, and it works as a supplement or modification to the general requirements laid out in IEC 63241-1:2023.

Focusing on the unique operational aspects and dust emissions of hand-held reciprocating saws, IEC 63241-2-11:2024 aims to ensure consistent, accurate measurement methods-supporting manufacturers, testers, and regulatory bodies in evaluating and improving dust control to enhance occupational health and safety.

Key Topics

  • Applicability to Reciprocating Saws: This standard specifically addresses jig saws and sabre saws, defining their features and requirements for dust measurement.
  • Test Procedure: Sets out conditions under which saws are to be tested, detailing material, set-up, tool settings, feed force, and the number of cuts, ensuring uniform testing environments.
  • Instrumentation Requirements: Refers to IEC 63241-1 for requirements related to the measuring instruments used during the testing process.
  • Reporting Information: Specifies the type of information to be documented, including any deviation or extension in testing cycles if standard cutting numbers cannot be achieved in the given time frame.
  • Normative References: Supplements IEC 63241-1 and also references materials-specific standards such as ISO 16893 for particleboard used in testing.

Applications

Implementing IEC 63241-2-11:2024 ensures that manufacturers and testing organizations:

  • Consistently Measure Dust Emissions: The standardized test method enables reliable comparison and validation of reciprocating saws with respect to dust generation, important for product development and regulatory compliance.
  • Enhance Worker Safety: By focusing on dust measurement, the standard supports initiatives to reduce airborne particulates, aligning with occupational health requirements.
  • Demonstrate Compliance: Manufacturers can use conformity with this IEC standard to meet legislative and market requirements, providing assurance to consumers and authorities regarding product safety and environmental responsibility.
  • Support National and International Regulations: Facilitates easier alignment with health and safety regulations pertaining to dust exposure in workplaces where electric motor-operated hand tools are used.

Related Standards

  • IEC 63241-1:2023: General requirements for electric motor-operated tools - Dust measurement procedure, forming the foundational reference for this part.
  • ISO 16893:2016: Specifies characteristics of wood-based panels, particularly particleboard, used as a reference test material in dust measurement procedures for reciprocating saws.
  • Other IEC 63241 series parts: Covering dust measurement procedures for different categories of electric motor-operated tools, supporting comprehensive dust control strategies across tool types.

Practical Value

Implementing IEC 63241-2-11:2024 offers substantial benefits for tool manufacturers, testing laboratories, and safety professionals involved with hand-held reciprocating saws. Harmonized dust measurement not only improves product safety but also assists businesses in meeting global market expectations, minimizing liability, and fostering safer working environments through better dust management.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
