Overview

EN 60335-2-51:2003/A1:2008 specifies the particular safety requirements for stationary circulation pumps used in household and similar heating and service water installations. Published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC or CLC), this amendment to EN 60335-2-51:2003 aligns with IEC 60335-2-51:2002/A1:2008. The main focus is to ensure the electrical safety of stationary circulation pumps to protect users-including vulnerable individuals-against hazards such as electric shock, mechanical injury, and unsafe surface temperatures.

This amendment introduces updates to the scope and certain requirements, reflecting outcomes from Technical Committee 61’s meetings and harmonizing with related ISO and IEC standards. Compliance is essential for manufacturers, installers, and regulators interested in safety assurance and CE marking for residential and similar electrical pump products.

Key Topics

  • Enhanced Safety Requirements: Defines the risks, safety measures, and test conditions specifically for stationary circulation pumps in heating and service water systems, supplementing the general requirements found in EN 60335-1.
  • Scope Clarification: Includes detailed language to protect users-including children and individuals with physical, sensory, or mental limitations-from unsafe appliance use or accidental contact.
  • Abnormal Operation Protection: Considers realistic abnormal situations, such as misuse and electromagnetic disturbances, giving guidance on appliance behavior under such conditions.
  • Testing and Compliance: Outlines updated methods and updates for assessing the safety of pump surfaces, in line with ISO 13732-1, to ensure hot surfaces do not present burn risks.

Applications

EN 60335-2-51:2003/A1:2008 applies to electrically powered, stationary circulation pumps integrated into:

  • Residential heating systems: Promoting energy-efficient and reliable movement of water for central heating in homes.
  • Domestic hot water systems: Ensuring safe distribution of service water, even in multi-unit or larger residential buildings.
  • Comparable installations: Such as small-scale commercial or light industrial premises where similar safety expectations apply.

Adherence to this standard is critical during the design, manufacturing, and installation phases for circulation pumps. It not only contributes to user safety but is often required for market entry and for obtaining CE marking in the European Union and EFTA countries.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1: Safety of household and similar electrical appliances - General requirements. It serves as the foundational reference for all part 2 specific standards.
  • IEC 60335-2-51: The international counterpart to EN 60335-2-51, providing global harmonization of requirements.
  • ISO 13732-1: Ergonomics of the thermal environment - Assessment of human responses to contact with hot surfaces; referenced for evaluating surface temperatures.
  • Other EN 60335 Series Standards: Covering safety for various household and similar electrical appliances, including kitchen, cleaning, and HVAC equipment.

Practical Value

Implementing EN 60335-2-51:2003/A1:2008 helps manufacturers, suppliers, and installers:

  • Reduce risk of accidents for end-users and service personnel during operation and maintenance.
  • Streamline regulatory compliance and facilitate market access within the EU.
  • Enhance trust among consumers and stakeholders by meeting recognized European safety benchmarks for electrical appliances in heating and water installations.

For organizations involved in the design, sale, or installation of stationary circulation pumps, this standard is an essential component of a comprehensive electrical safety and compliance program.
