Overview
EN 60068-2-42:2003 is a European standard published by CLC that specifies environmental testing methods focused on assessing the corrosive effects of sulphur dioxide (SO₂) atmospheres on electrical contacts and connections. This accelerated test method, known as Test Kc: Sulphur dioxide test, provides a controlled way to evaluate how contacts and connections, especially those made from precious metals or precious metal coatings, withstand the corrosive impact of polluted industrial atmospheres.
The standard supports manufacturers and testing laboratories by offering reproducible, comparative data essential for ensuring the reliability and durability of electrical connectors in harsh environmental conditions containing sulphur compounds.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
- Accelerated corrosion test for contacts and solderless connections exposed to sulphur dioxide atmospheres
- Specifically excludes pure silver and certain silver alloys due to their unique properties
- Focus on changes in contact resistance as the primary performance criterion
Test Conditions and Atmosphere
- SO₂ concentration typically at 25 ppm ± 5 ppm (total sulphur oxides expressed as SO₂)
- Temperature controlled at 25 °C ± 2 °C
- Relative humidity maintained near 75%, not exceeding 80% or below 70%
- Air and sulphur dioxide mixed to generate a homogeneous test atmosphere
- Specimens moved or stirred within the test chamber to ensure consistent exposure
Test Chamber Design
- Constructed from materials inert to SO₂, avoiding absorption or reaction
- Atmospheric flow rate designed for 3 to 5 complete air changes per hour
- Avoids condensation and direct sunlight exposure
- Controlled lighting between 50 lx and 300 lx at specimen location
Test Procedure
- Preconditioning includes initial electrical and mechanical measurements (contact resistance measured using IEC 60512-2-1 method)
- Specimens can be tested with contacts open or closed, under no electrical load or as specified
- Exposure durations set typically at 4, 10, or 21 days depending on detail specifications
- Post-test measurements performed after a recovery period of 1 to 2 hours under standard conditions
- Careful handling to prevent disturbance of contact surfaces before final measurements
Measurement and Evaluation
- Contact resistance before and after exposure forms the key metric
- Mechanical endurance checks may complement electrical testing
- Visual inspection may be required under certain specifications
- A consistent test methodology ensures comparable results across different laboratories and products
Applications
EN 60068-2-42:2003 is widely used in industries where electrical connectors, contacts, and solderless joints are exposed to environments contaminated with sulphur dioxide, such as:
- Industrial and manufacturing plants with sulphur-emitting processes
- Power generation and distribution systems in polluted urban or industrial areas
- Automotive and transportation sectors where environmental pollutants impact electrical reliability
- Consumer electronics and telecommunications, assuring connector performance under corrosive atmospheres
- Aerospace and defense applications, requiring enhanced durability of electrical contacts in harsh conditions
By utilizing this standard, manufacturers can compare materials and connection designs, improve corrosion resistance, and reduce failures due to sulphur dioxide-induced corrosion. It also aids in quality assurance and compliance for environmental robustness in electrical and electronic components.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 60068-2-42 has been prepared by subcommittee 48B: Connectors,
of IEC technical committee 48: Electromechanical components and mechanical structures for
electronic equipment.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition issued in 1982 and constitutes
a technical revision.
