Overview
EN IEC 62281:2019/A1:2021 is a European standard developed by CLC (CENELEC) that addresses the safety of primary and secondary lithium cells and batteries during transport. Lithium cells and batteries are widely used in various industries due to their high energy density and reliability. However, their safe handling, especially during transport, is essential to minimize risks related to fire, leakage, or explosion. This amendment (A1) to the base standard EN IEC 62281:2019 updates specific provisions to align with the latest international transport regulations and improves the clarity of transport safety requirements.
By harmonizing with international standards, EN IEC 62281:2019/A1:2021 provides a consistent framework for meeting transport safety expectations, ensuring proper documentation and testing for lithium batteries.
Key Topics
The standard focuses on several critical safety aspects concerning the transportation of lithium cells and batteries, including:
- Identification and Labeling: Clear labeling and identification of lithium cells and batteries for safe transport and easy recognition by handlers.
- Test Reporting: Requirements for a test report summary, including model numbers, mass of cells/batteries, and the applicability of test summaries to product ranges.
- Compliance with International Regulations: Reference to key documents such as the United Nations Manual of Tests and Criteria and Model Regulations for Dangerous Goods Transport.
- Documentation: Ensuring accurate, up-to-date, and complete documentation accompanies shipments of lithium cells and batteries.
- Handling and Packaging: Guidelines for proper handling, storage, and packaging during transport to prevent short circuits, heating, or physical damage.
Applications
EN IEC 62281:2019/A1:2021 is directly relevant for a range of stakeholders in the supply chain of lithium batteries, including:
- Manufacturers of Lithium Batteries: Ensuring their products meet safety and documentation requirements for global transport.
- Logistics and Shipping Companies: Facilitating safe handling and prompt identification during customs and transport operations.
- Importers and Exporters: Assisting in compliance with international safety regulations, avoiding delays and penalties.
- Regulatory Authorities: Providing a basis for checking compliance during inspections or accident investigations.
- Product Designers: Ensuring that products incorporating lithium cells or batteries are tested according to recognized standards before shipment.
Proper application of this standard improves transport safety, reduces the risk of in-transit incidents, and streamlines logistics with consistent documentation and labeling practices.
Related Standards
Organizations working with lithium batteries should be aware of additional standards that complement or inform the requirements of EN IEC 62281:2019/A1:2021:
- UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Section 38.3: Specifies tests required for lithium batteries prior to transport, including impact, vibration, and thermal tests.
- UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Model Regulations: Internationally recognized rules guiding the classification, labeling, and handling of hazardous materials, including lithium batteries.
- EN IEC 62133: Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary cells and batteries.
- IEC 60086 series: Covers safety and performance for primary batteries.
By referencing these related standards, businesses can ensure comprehensive compliance and enhance lithium battery transport safety across the supply chain.
