Overview
EN 61754-22:2005 (IEC 61754-22) specifies the standardized mechanical interface dimensions for the Type F‑SMA connector family used in fibre optic systems. Published by CENELEC and aligned with IEC 61754‑22:2005, this part of the IEC 61754 series defines plug, adaptor and receptacle interfaces to ensure mechanical intermateability across manufacturers. The F‑SMA family is a single‑way, non‑contacting connector with a 1/4‑36‑UNS threaded coupling and a nominal 3.175 mm cylindrical ferrule.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Interface definitions: Interface 22‑1 (plug F‑SMA I & II), 22‑3 (adaptor) and 22‑4 (receptacle) including mechanical and optical reference planes.
- Coupling mechanism: 1/4‑36‑UNS threaded sleeve (specified depth and nut clearance) to guarantee repeatable mating.
- Ferrule dimensions: nominal ferrule diameter 3.175 mm with specific tolerances:
- F‑SMA I (precision/silica): ferrule diameter ranges indicated (e.g., ~3.166–3.172 mm over critical length).
- F‑SMA II (modified/large‑core POF): slightly different ferrule tolerance (e.g., ~3.15–3.17 mm).
- Adaptor & receptacle tolerances: internal diameters, counterbores and chamfers to accept plugs and maintain optical alignment using a rigid bore sleeve.
- Grade table: sleeve internal diameter grades (e.g., Grade 1–3) that control alignment precision and indicate grade 3 is admissible for F‑SMA II (POF) only.
- Mechanical/optical datums: specified reference planes and unobstructed nut clearances for reliable mating and equipment mounting.
Applications and who uses this standard
EN 61754‑22 is intended for:
- Connector and adaptor manufacturers - to design parts that mate interchangeably.
- Cable assemblers and test labs - to specify and verify dimensional compliance for assemblies and gauges.
- System integrators and procurement teams - to select compatible F‑SMA components for multimode and plastic optical fibre (POF) links.
- Equipment designers - embedding F‑SMA receptacles or adaptors in instruments, transceivers or converters.
F‑SMA connectors are suited to multimode fibre installations and to large‑core POF applications (F‑SMA II), commonly found in short‑range data links, consumer/industrial optics and LED‑based systems.
Related standards

- IEC 60793‑2 (optical fibre product categories referenced for fibre types)
- National implementations: EN 61754‑22 supersedes EN 186100:1994 and may be adopted as national standards across CENELEC members.

FOREWORD 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user. 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter. 5) I
