IEC 60549:2013 applies to external fuses used with high-voltage capacitors according to IEC 60871-1, Shunt capacitors for a.c. power systems having a rated voltage above 1 000 V - Part 1: General. IEC 60871-1 is applicable to both capacitor units and capacitor banks intended to be used, particularly, for power-factor correction of a.c. power systems, and also to capacitors intended for use in power filter circuits. Fuses according to IEC 60549:2013 are intended to clear either faults inside a capacitor unit to permit continued operation of the remaining parts of the bank in which the unit is connected (unit fuses) or faults on the whole capacitor bank to isolate the bank from the system (line fuses). This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1976. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - alignment of the document with current IEC document structure requirements; - clarification of certain test requirements. Keywords: external fuses used with high-voltage capacitors, shunt capacitors for a.c.power system

IEC 60644:2009 applies primarily to fuse-links used with motors started direct-on-line on alternating current systems of 50 Hz and 60 Hz. Standardizes time-current characteristics to formulate additional pulse withstand requirements regarding testing and to give guidance for the selection of fuse-links to be used with motors. Note: Fuse-links according to this specification should comply with the requirements of IEC 60282-1. The main changes with regard to the previous edition concern the following: - update of the normative references; - renewal of the figures.

This document specifies requirements for protective provisions against the effects of stray currents, which result from the operation of DC electric traction power supply systems. As several decades' experience has not shown evident corrosion effects from AC electric traction power supply systems, this document only deals with stray currents flowing from a DC electric traction power supply system. This document applies to all metallic fixed installations which form part of the traction system, and also to any other metallic components located in any position in the earth, which can carry stray currents resulting from the operation of the railway system. This document applies to all new DC lines and to all major revisions to existing DC lines. The principles can also be applied to existing electrified transportation systems where it is necessary to consider the effects of stray currents. This document does not specify working rules for maintenance but provides design requirements to allow maintenance. The range of application includes: a) railways, b) guided mass transport systems such as: 1) tramways, 2) elevated and underground railways, 3) mountain railways, 4) magnetically levitated systems, which use a contact line system, and 5) trolleybus systems, c) material transportation systems. This document does not apply to a) electric traction power supply systems in underground mines, b) cranes, transportable platforms and similar transportation equipment on rails, temporary structures (e.g. exhibition structures) in so far as these are not supplied directly from the contact line system and are not endangered by the electric traction power supply system, c) suspended cable cars, d) funicular railways.

This document specifies requirements for the protective provisions relating to electrical safety in fixed installations, when it is reasonably likely that hazardous voltages or currents will arise for people or equipment, as a result of the mutual interaction of AC and DC electric power supply traction systems. It also applies to all aspects of fixed installations that are necessary to ensure electrical safety during maintenance work within electric power supply traction systems. The mutual interaction can be of any of the following kinds: - parallel running of AC and DC electric traction power supply systems; - crossing of AC and DC electric traction power supply systems; - shared use of tracks, buildings or other structures; - system separation sections between AC and DC electric traction power supply systems. The scope is limited to galvanic, inductive and capacitive coupling of the fundamental frequency voltages and currents and their superposition. This document applies to all new lines, extensions and to all major revisions to existing lines for the following electric traction power supply systems: a) railways; b) guided mass transport systems such as: 1) tramways, 2) elevated and underground railways, 3) mountain railways, 4) magnetically levitated systems, which use a contact line system, 5) trolleybus systems, and 6) electric traction power supply systems for road vehicles, which use an overhead contact line system; c) material transportation systems. The document does not apply to: a) electric traction power supply systems in underground mines; b) cranes, transportable platforms and similar transportation equipment on rails, temporary structures (e.g. exhibition structures) in so far as these are not supplied directly or via transformers from the contact line system and are not endangered by the electric traction power supply system for railways; c) suspended cable cars; d) funicular railways; e) procedures or rules for maintenance. The rules given in this document can also be applied to mutual interaction with non-electrified tracks, if hazardous voltages or currents can arise from AC or DC electric traction power supply systems.

These supplementary requirements apply to fuse-links for application in equipment containing semiconductor devices for circuits of nominal voltages up to 1 000 V AC. or 1 500 V DC. and also, in so far as they are applicable, for circuits of higher nominal voltages. NOTE 1 Such fuse-Iinks are commonly referred to as "semiconductor fuse-links". NOTE 2 In most cases, a part of the associated equipment serves the purpose of a fuse-base. Owing to the great variety of equipment, no general rules can be given; the suitability of the associated equipment to serve as a fuse- base should be subject to agreement between the manufacturer and the user. However, if separate fuse-bases or fuse-holders are used, they should comply with the appropriate requirements of IEC 60269-1. NOTE 3 IEC 60269-6 (Low-voltage fuses – Part 6: Supplementary requirements for fuse-links for the protection of solar photovoltaic energy systems) is dedicated to the protection of solar photovoltaic energy systems. NOTE 4 These fuse-links are intended for use on systems employing the standardized voltages and tolerances of IEC 60038. Tests carried out on fuse-links in accordance with previous editions of this standard shall remain valid until such time as complimentary equipment has evolved to the standardized voltages and tolerances of IEC 60038. The object of these supplementary requirements is to establish the characteristics of semiconductor fuse-links in such a way that they can be replaced by other fuse-links having the same characteristics, provided that their dimensions are identical. For this purpose, this standard refers in particular to a) the following characteristics of fuses: 1) their rated values; 2) their temperature rises in normal service; 3) their power dissipation; 4) their time-current characteristics; 5) their breaking capacity; 6) their cut-off current characteristics and their I2t characteristics; 7) their arc voltage characteristics; b) type tests for verification of the characteristics of fuses; c) the markings on fuses; d) availability and presentation of technical data (see Annex BB).

IEC 60269-3:2024 is divided into four fuse systems, each dealing with a specific example of standardized fuses for use by unskilled persons. This part applies to “gG” fuses only. Unskilled persons do not have technical knowledge or sufficient experience. To avoid dangers, which electricity may create, the relevant part of the fuse standard shall provide requirements for maximum safety in service. IEC 60269-3 provides four systems for use by unskilled persons. Instructions for the safe operation of fuse-links are provided in the manufacturer’s literature. All systems provide their own mechanical solution to avoid the use of a fuse-link with higher current rating (non-interchangeability) whereas the protection of cables and lines is ensured. The applicant is required to take care to replace a fuse-link by the same type.
