Overview
EN 60335-2-4:2010/A2:2019 is a European standard developed by CLC (CENELEC) that addresses the safety requirements specifically for spin extractors used in households and similar environments. As an amendment to EN 60335-2-4:2010, this standard aligns closely with international efforts to harmonize safety regulations for laundry appliances, especially those concerning moisture resistance and user protection. EN 60335-2-4:2010/A2:2019 is also designed to support compliance with the EU Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, helping manufacturers place safe electrical spin extractors on the European market.
Key Topics
- Specific Safety Requirements: The standard supplements general safety criteria in EN 60335-1 with particular requirements dedicated to the operation of spin extractors, ensuring robust consumer protection.
- Amendment Highlights: Updates are made to procedures for testing moisture resistance, focusing on spillage, drainage, and controls’ exposure to liquids during operation. Annex AA on rinsing agents is deleted, streamlining compliance.
- Harmonization with Directives: By meeting the normative clauses, products are presumed to conform with central safety objectives set out in the Low Voltage Directive (LVD).
- Normative References: The document references other international and European standards, providing a framework for comprehensive appliance evaluation.
Applications
EN 60335-2-4:2010/A2:2019 is vital for:
- Manufacturers of spin extractors and similar laundry appliances, giving them a clear framework to design, test, and market compliant products within the European Economic Area.
- Testing and Certification Bodies who evaluate and certify household electrical appliances for market access, relying on the detailed procedures for moisture resistance and surface protection.
- Product Designers focused on user safety engineering, enabling the integration of best practices for enclosure protection, electrical safety, and regulatory compliance.
- Regulatory Authorities overseeing market surveillance and consumer protection, using the standard as a reference point when assessing the conformity of spin extractors in the marketplace.
Adherence to the standard not only helps ensure consumer safety but also facilitates smooth market access within EU member states and EFTA countries, minimizing the risk of costly recalls or compliance disputes.
Related Standards
EN 60335-2-4:2010/A2:2019 is used together with related standards, including:
- EN 60335-1:2012 and amendments (General Requirements): Lays down foundational safety principles for all household and similar electrical appliances.
- IEC 60730-2-12: Addresses automatic electrical controls for household use, particularly applicable to electrically operated door locks.
- Other Parts of EN 60335 Series: Covering specific requirements for a wide range of appliances, enabling a consistent approach to household electrical safety.
The standard is also aligned with compliance objectives in the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), offering a route to market that ensures regulatory acceptance across the European Union.
By following EN 60335-2-4:2010/A2:2019, organizations demonstrate their commitment to high safety standards in the design and marketing of spin extractors, ultimately protecting users and supporting efficient product approval across Europe.
