This document amends EN IEC 63341-2 which applies to onboard hydrogen fuel systems used to supply the fuel cells for the traction power and the auxiliaries supply of rolling stock vehicles (such as hybrid vehicles as defined in EN IEC 62864-1). NOTE 1 This document may also be used as informative recommendations for applications with hydrogen internal combustion engines. EN IEC 63341-2 applies to hydrogen storage in gaseous form. Other means of storage (such as liquid, liquid cryo-compressed, metal hydrides) are not covered in this document. EN IEC 63341-2 applies to any rolling stock type (e.g. light rail vehicles, tramways, streetcars, metros, commuter trains, regional trains, high speed trains, locomotives). EN IEC 63341-2 addresses the mechanical, fluidic and electrical interfaces between the on-board hydrogen fuel system and fuelling station. The fuelling station, fuelling protocol and communication for the fuelling protocol are not in the scope of this document. EN IEC 63341-2 defines: – the scope of supply of hydrogen fuel system (HFS) and the description of the interfaces with sub-systems internal and external to the rolling stock such as fuel cell power system, fuelling station systems; – the environmental constraints; – the design requirements to support HFS compliance with railway applications; – the safety and reliability requirements to design and install the HFS for railway applications; – the marking and labelling requirements; – the requirements related to storage, transportation, installation and maintenance; – the validation (type, routine and investigation tests) requirements

Overview

FprEN IEC 63341-2:2025/prAA:2025 is a crucial European draft amendment developed by CLC/TC 9X, focusing on safety, reliability, and technical requirements for hydrogen fuel systems in rolling stock. This standard amends EN IEC 63341-2 and is intended for onboard hydrogen fuel systems that supply fuel cells for both traction power and auxiliary systems in railway vehicles, including hybrids as per EN IEC 62864-1. It primarily addresses hydrogen storage in gaseous form and covers all types of rolling stock, such as light rail vehicles, trams, metros, regional and high-speed trains, and locomotives.

Key benefits of this standard include enhanced safety measures, structural design guidance, fire protection requirements, and maintenance protocols for the deployment of hydrogen technology in the railway sector.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Supply and Interfaces
    • Details the boundaries between the hydrogen fuel system (HFS), the rolling stock, fuel cell power systems, and external fuelling stations.
    • Establishes requirements for mechanical, fluidic, and electrical interfaces.
  • Environmental and Structural Requirements
    • Specifies environmental constraints for system components.
    • Structural design to be validated according to EN 12663-1 and welding requirements per EN 15085-4.
  • Safety and Reliability
    • Emphasizes leak detection and inspection using methods aligned with EN 1779.
    • Outlines comprehensive fire protection requirements according to EN 45545-2 and fire resistance testing aligned with EN 1363-1, EN 1364-1, and EN 1364-2.
  • Marking, Labelling, and Maintenance
    • Mandates systematic marking and labelling for all HFS components.
    • Defines robust maintenance activities, including visual inspections, leak tests, functional verifications, and periodic inspections using recognized standards like ISO 19078 and ISO 19880-1.
  • Validation and Testing
    • Requirements for type, routine, and investigation tests for HFS.

Applications

The FprEN IEC 63341-2:2025/prAA:2025 standard is highly relevant for a range of railway applications:

  • Rolling Stock Manufacturers: Ensuring compliance from design through installation and operational phases of hydrogen-powered and hybrid rail vehicles.
  • Maintenance Providers: Establishing effective maintenance plans, including preventive inspections, leak detection, and record-keeping.
  • Railway Operators: Enhancing operational safety, reliability, and efficiency by following internationally recognized procedures for hydrogen fuel systems.
  • Regulators and Assessors: Benchmarking compliance and validating rolling stock safety against Europe’s most current hydrogen standards.
  • Hydrogen Technology Integrators: Facilitating safe integration of hydrogen storage and supply systems within the broader rail ecosystem.

Key focus is placed on gaseous hydrogen storage, routine inspections, fire protection, and standardized interfaces – all critical for the growth of sustainable, hydrogen-powered rail transport.

Related Standards

For comprehensive implementation, this standard should be used alongside other relevant railway and hydrogen technology standards, including:

  • EN IEC 63341-1: Fuel cell power systems for rolling stock.
  • EN 12663-1: Structural requirements for railway vehicle bodies.
  • EN 15085-4: Welding requirements for railway vehicles.
  • EN 45545-2: Fire protection for railway vehicles.
  • EN 1779: Leak testing criteria.
  • ISO 17268-4: Hydrogen refuelling receptacles.
  • ISO 19880-1: Hydrogen refuelling station requirements.
  • ISO 19078: In-service inspections for pressurized gas containers.
  • EN 1363-1, EN 1364-1, EN 1364-2: Fire resistance tests for construction elements in rolling stock.

By adhering to FprEN IEC 63341-2:2025/prAA:2025, stakeholders across the rail industry can confidently address the challenges of integrating hydrogen fuel systems, leading to safer, greener, and more reliable passenger and freight transportation.
