Overview
EN 60335-2-109:2010/A2:2018 specifies the particular safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances used for water treatment by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC), this standard is an amendment to EN 60335-2-109:2010, which aligns with IEC 60335-2-109. It addresses potential hazards associated with UV water treatment appliances, ensuring their safe operation in residential and similar environments.
The standard covers necessary modifications and additions to the general safety requirements established in EN 60335-1 and aims to support the implementation of essential EU directives for electrical safety. This amendment is critical for manufacturers, designers, and testing bodies engaged in the production and evaluation of UV water treatment equipment for home and similar use.
Key Topics
- Scope: Focuses on electrical water treatment appliances, particularly those utilizing UV radiation to disinfect or treat water intended for domestic consumption or similar purposes.
- Safety Requirements: Clarifies safety protocols including construction, internal wiring, resistance to moisture, and the control of radiation-related hazards. For example, IPX8-class appliances must undergo strict immersion testing to verify resistance to water ingress.
- Construction Standards: Introduces specific tests for appliances connected to pressurized water systems, mandating pressure tests at 1.5 times the rated pressure where relevant.
- Radiation and Toxicity Controls: Updates procedures related to the assessment of radiation, toxicity, and similar hazards to minimize risk to users.
- Compliance and Implementation: Facilitates alignment with EU directives and provides guidance for the adoption and withdrawal of related conflicting national standards.
Applications
This standard is essential for a range of stakeholders involved in the design, production, and regulation of UV water treatment appliances for household and similar uses, including:
- Manufacturers: Ensures product design meets stringent safety and testing requirements, supporting CE marking and market access across Europe.
- Regulatory Authorities: Provides a framework for assessing compliance with harmonized EU safety directives.
- Testing Laboratories: Supplies updated test methods and safety benchmarks, particularly for water ingress (IPX8 testing) and radiation exposure.
- Installers and Service Providers: Offers clarity on safe installation practices and ongoing maintenance requirements for UV-based water treatment units in residential and semi-domestic settings.
Common practical applications include under-sink water purifiers, standalone water treatment units, and domestic plumbing systems incorporating UV disinfection. By following EN 60335-2-109:2010/A2:2018, organizations can demonstrate commitment to quality, safety, and regulatory conformity.
Related Standards
When working with UV radiation water treatment appliances, the following related standards should also be considered:
- EN 60335-1: Household and similar electrical appliances - General safety requirements.
- IEC 60529: Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code), referenced for moisture and ingress protection tests.
- IEC 60335-2-109: International counterpart for UV water treatment appliance safety requirements.
- EN 60335-2 series: Covers particular safety requirements for various types of household electrical appliances.
By referencing these standards in conjunction with EN 60335-2-109:2010/A2:2018, stakeholders ensure comprehensive compliance and advance safety in the use of UV water treatment technology for domestic and similar applications.
