Overview

EN IEC 61800-9-2:2025/A1:2026 is a European standard developed by CENELEC for adjustable speed electrical power drive systems (PDS). This standard focuses on ecodesign for motor systems, outlining methods for energy efficiency determination and classification. Serving as an amendment to the existing EN IEC 61800-9-2:2025, it incorporates international best practices for evaluating, comparing, and improving the energy performance of variable speed drive systems and their components.

Energy efficiency is a key driver for designing and deploying motor-driven systems across industries, underpinning sustainability, operational cost reduction, and legislative compliance, especially within the context of the European Union’s energy efficiency objectives.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Applies to adjustable speed electrical power drive systems (PDS) and motor systems, focusing on their energy efficiency and supporting the ecodesign regulatory framework.
  • Classification System: Describes determination and classification of energy efficiency classes (IE classes) for individual components, including complete drive modules (CDM), standalone inverter modules (SDIM), and output modules (SDOM).
  • Calculation Methods: Provides standardized formulae and correction factors for measuring and classifying losses in different PDS configurations. Amendment A1 updates several key formulas and factors to ensure accuracy and reflect technological developments.
  • Correction Factors: Details how to apply correction factors for various topologies, including considerations for harmonic distortion, regenerative capabilities, external cooling, and rated voltage. These factors allow fair comparison and more accurate efficiency assessment.
  • Compliance & Harmonization: Aligns with the European and international drive towards more stringent ecological and energy-saving regulations for industrial and commercial motor applications.

Applications

EN IEC 61800-9-2:2025/A1:2026 is widely used in the following contexts:

  • Industrial Automation: Ensures the energy-efficient operation of adjustable speed drives, which are critical for pumps, conveyors, fans, and compressors.
  • Product Design & Certification: Used by manufacturers and designers to develop products that meet high energy performance standards, aiding market access and regulatory compliance.
  • System Integration: Helps system integrators and engineers to specify and verify the best-fit energy efficiency class for drive systems in various installations.
  • Procurement & Specification: Assists end users and procurement specialists in selecting products based on standardized energy efficiency metrics, supporting cost-effective and sustainable purchasing decisions.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Supports organizations in adhering to EU/EEA energy efficiency legislation and related market requirements for electrical drive and motor systems.

Related Standards

Several other international and European standards are closely linked to EN IEC 61800-9-2:2025/A1:2026:

  • EN IEC 61800-9-2:2025: The base standard for energy efficiency in adjustable speed PDS and their classification.
  • IEC 61800-9-1: General framework and methodology for ecodesign and energy efficiency determination in motor-driven units.
  • IEC 60034 series: General requirements and efficiency grading for electrical motors.
  • IEC 61800 series: Standards covering comprehensive aspects of adjustable speed electrical power drive systems, including safety and performance.

By following EN IEC 61800-9-2:2025/A1:2026, manufacturers, system designers, and users can standardize energy efficiency evaluations and classifications, benefiting from increased transparency, sustainability, and regulatory reliability across the electrical drive systems sector. This standard plays a vital role in achieving energy efficiency, promoting sustainable development, and supporting compliance with international energy management expectations.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that
