Overview
EN 60335-2-59:2003/A1:2006 is a European standard developed by CENELEC (CLC) that specifies the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances-specifically, insect killers. This amendment (A1:2006) aligns the European standard with international safety norms, ensuring a high level of consumer protection and consistent performance of electrical insect killer devices.
As part of the EN 60335 series for appliance safety, this standard is crucial for manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and certification agencies involved in the design, testing, and approval of electrical insect killers intended for domestic and commercial use.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: EN 60335-2-59:2003/A1:2006 provides guidelines for minimizing risks associated with the operation of insect killers, covering normal as well as reasonably foreseeable abnormal conditions.
- Safety Requirements: The standard emphasizes electrical, mechanical, and thermal safety to prevent hazards such as electric shock, fire, and injury.
- Radiation and Toxicity Considerations: The amendment addresses radiation emission-particularly UV radiation-by offering detailed criteria for measuring and evaluating exposure, including the use of specific weighting factors for different wavelengths.
- Electromagnetic Phenomena: The document considers disturbances arising from electromagnetic sources and their impact on the safe operation of insect killers.
- Harmonization: This amendment ensures consistency with IEC 60335-2-59:2002/A1:2006 and requires no national deviations, streamlining compliance across EU member states.
Applications
EN 60335-2-59:2003/A1:2006 applies to:
- Household Use: Electrical insect killers designed for domestic environments, including kitchens, living spaces, and patios.
- Similar Environments: Appliances used in commercial settings such as restaurants, shops, supermarkets, and food storage areas, provided they are not intended for industrial use.
- Product Design and Manufacturing: The standard guides manufacturers in designing safe, efficient, and reliable insect killing appliances, ensuring products meet the essential safety criteria required for CE marking.
- Testing and Certification: Laboratories and certification bodies refer to this standard to verify compliance before market release, focusing on electrical insulation, construction, radiation exposure limits, and resistance to environmental influences.
Related Standards
- EN 60335-1: Safety of household and similar electrical appliances-General requirements. This is the base standard that EN 60335-2-59 supplements with specific requirements for insect killers.
- IEC 60335-2-59: This international standard, adopted in Europe, ensures global consistency in safety requirements for electrical insect killers.
- EN 62233: Measurement methods for electromagnetic fields from household appliances, relevant given this standard’s emphasis on radiation and electromagnetic compatibility.
- Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive): Market access requirement for electrical appliances within the EU, which references compliance with harmonized standards such as EN 60335.
Conclusion
Compliance with EN 60335-2-59:2003/A1:2006 is essential for manufacturers and distributors of electrical insect killers in Europe. It ensures not only the safety and quality of products but also market acceptance and consumer confidence. Leveraging this standard helps organizations navigate the complexities of appliance safety, streamline certification, and uphold high standards in domestic and similar environments.
