Overview
EN 1129-2:1995 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the test methods for assessing the safety of foldaway beds for domestic use. Foldaway beds, also known as wall beds or Murphy beds, are furniture units designed to be folded away when not in use, optimizing living space in residential environments. This standard covers only foldaway beds intended for regular domestic use and does not include folding beds, camping beds, convertible bed/chairs, or settees.
The test methods outlined in EN 1129-2:1995 are intended for application to fully assembled, ready-to-use foldaway beds. The results obtained are strictly applicable to the article tested. Where results are to be applied to similar products, the test specimen should accurately represent the actual production model.
Key Topics
- Scope of Testing: The standard details procedures for evaluating the structural and mechanical safety of foldaway beds in domestic settings.
- Test Conditions: All tests are to be performed on beds that are fully assembled and in the condition intended for use, ensuring realistic and reproducible results.
- Safety Focus: The tests are designed to identify hazards and assess compliance with established safety requirements for foldaway beds, helping to reduce risks of injury or damage during operation.
- Limitations: Excludes products such as folding beds, camping beds, and convertible furniture, focusing specifically on beds that can be folded away as a space-saving measure.
Applications
Implementing EN 1129-2:1995 test methods is essential for:
- Manufacturers: Ensuring that new foldaway bed designs meet stringent safety requirements before market launch.
- Testing Laboratories: Performing standardized assessments on behalf of manufacturers for product certification or quality assurance purposes.
- Retailers: Selecting tested and compliant products to ensure customer safety and minimize liability.
- Regulatory Compliance: Demonstrating conformity with European safety directives for furniture, supporting CE marking and market access.
- Consumer Safety: Providing assurance that foldaway beds are safe for domestic use, reducing the likelihood of accidents or malfunctions within the home environment.
