Overview

EN ISO 9974-1:2000 specifies the dimensions and requirements for threaded ports using ISO 261 metric screw threads with elastomeric (type E) or metal-to-metal (type B) sealing. This standard is crucial for both general use and fluid power applications, such as hydraulic and pneumatic systems, where reliable, leak-free connections are essential. Developed by CEN, EN ISO 9974-1 provides standardization that supports interoperability, safety, and performance in components such as pumps, valves, motors, and cylinders. This document is aligned with the ISO 9974 series and associated standards, ensuring consistency and compatibility in the design and manufacturing of fluid power connections.

Key Topics

  • Threaded Port Design
EN ISO 9974-1 defines dimensional requirements for ports using ISO 261 threads, allowing for either elastomeric or metal-to-metal seals. These requirements ensure compatibility with stud ends as detailed in ISO 9974-2 and ISO 9974-3.

  • Sealing Methods
The standard covers both elastomeric (type E) and metal-to-metal (type B) sealing methods, providing options for different application requirements and fluid compatibility.

  • Pressure Ratings
Ports conforming to this standard can be used at working pressures up to 63 MPa (630 bar), although permissible pressure is also influenced by factors such as port size, material, and operating conditions.

  • Test Methods
Specific test methods and performance criteria are provided, referencing ISO 9974-2 and ISO 9974-3, to ensure leak-tight integrity and reliable operation of the connections.

  • Designation and Identification
The standard outlines how ports should be designated in technical documentation and commercial literature to promote clear communication and product traceability.

Applications

EN ISO 9974-1 is widely used in industries where robust and standardized fluid connections are required. Typical applications include:

  • Hydraulic Power Systems
Used extensively in machinery for manufacturing, construction, and heavy equipment where high-pressure oil or fluid transfer is essential.

  • Pneumatic Systems
Applied in systems transmitting compressed air or other gases under pressure, such as automation equipment and process industries.

  • General Industrial Use
Employed wherever threaded fluid ports are needed, from general machinery to process control and instrumentation.

  • Component Integration
Ports specified by this standard are integral to the manufacture of valves, pumps, actuators, cylinders, and other fluid power components.

Related Standards

Adoption and implementation of EN ISO 9974-1 benefit from awareness of related and supporting standards, including:

  • ISO 9974 Series:

    • ISO 9974-2: Stud ends with elastomeric (type E) sealing
    • ISO 9974-3: Stud ends with metal-to-metal (type B) sealing
  • Other Key References:

    • ISO 261: General-purpose metric screw threads
    • ISO 1179: Fluid power port and stud end connections (earlier standard for port design)
    • ISO 11926: Connections with ISO 725 threads and O-ring sealing
    • ISO 6149: Port and stud end connections with modern O-ring sealing for new designs
    • DIN 3852: Equivalent German standard for stud ends and tapped holes
  • Associated Component and Drawing Standards:

    • ISO 8434, ISO 6410, ISO 5598, ISO 1302

Practical Value

Following EN ISO 9974-1 ensures that threaded ports used in fluid power and general mechanical applications are interchangeable, reliable, and safe. The use of globally recognized ISO 261 threads and well-established sealing types supports efficient procurement, maintenance, and servicing, reducing the risk of leaks, premature failures, and compatibility issues in critical systems.

Organizations across industrial sectors benefit from this standard’s clear guidance on port machining, compatibility with related fittings, and rigorous test methods, supporting quality, safety, and international supply chain integration.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide fed-
eration of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be rep-
resented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0 col-
laborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are cir-
culated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 9974-l was prepared jointly by Technical
Committees ISOFC 5, Ferrous metal pipes and metallic fittings, Sub-
committee SC 5, Threaded or plain end butt-we/ding fittings, threads,
gauging of threads, and lSO/TC 131, Fluid power systems, Subcommittee
SC 4, Connectors and similar products and components.
IS0 9974 consists of the following parts, under the general title Connec-
tions for general use and fluid power - Ports and stud ends with IS0 261
threads with elastomeric or metal-to-metal sealing.
- Part 1: Threaded ports
- Part 2: Stud ends with elastomeric sealing (type E)
Part 3: Stud ends with metal-to-metal sealing (type 6)
The performance requirements, dimensions and designs are defined for
port and stud end connections for the L and S series in IS0 9974-Z and for
the LL, L and S series in IS0 9974-3. Significant testing over more than
30 years of use has confirmed the performance requirements of these
port and stud end connections.
Stud ends conforming to IS0 9974-2 and 9974-3 are identical to those
conforming to DIN 3852-l. IS0 9974-2 stud ends are used on IS0 8434-l
and IS0 8434-4 fittings, and IS0 9974-3 stud ends are used on IS0 8434-l
fittings.

Introduction
In fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a fluid
(liquid or gas) under pressure within an enclosed circuit. In general appli-
cations, a fluid may be conveyed under pressure.
Components are connected through their threaded ports by fluid conduc-
tor fittings to tubes and pipes or to hose fittings and hoses.
Ports are an integral part of fluid power components, such as pumps,
motors, valves, cylinders, etc.
