Overview
CEN/TS 17779:2022 is a technical specification published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that outlines a standardized method for the extraction of phosphorus soluble in neutral ammonium citrate from organo-mineral fertilizers. This method ensures consistent and reliable results that facilitate the quality control, assessment, and regulatory compliance of fertilizer products throughout the European market.
By specifying a uniform procedure for phosphorus extraction, CEN/TS 17779:2022 supports the fertilizer industry in providing accurate and comparable data for phosphorus content, which is essential for both agronomic performance and environmental stewardship.
Key Topics
- Scope: The standard method applies exclusively to organo-mineral fertilizers, which combine organic and mineral nutrient sources to promote sustainable agriculture.
- Extraction Principle: Phosphorus is extracted from samples using a neutral ammonium citrate solution at pH 7 and maintained at 65 °C, following specified laboratory handling and filtration protocols.
- Sampling: Emphasizes careful sample preparation and adherence to referenced sampling standards to ensure representative results.
- Reagents and Apparatus: Details the preparation and composition of the neutral ammonium citrate extractant and outlines the required laboratory equipment, such as thermostatically controlled water baths, pH meters, and filtration devices.
- Analytical Consistency: Subsequent phosphorus determination is to be performed according to referenced methods, promoting harmonization across laboratories and regulatory bodies.
Applications
CEN/TS 17779:2022 provides practical value for:
- Fertilizer Manufacturers: Supports quality assurance processes by enabling accurate and repeatable measurement of plant-available phosphorus in organo-mineral fertilizers.
- Accredited Testing Laboratories: Standardizes analytical procedures to facilitate reliable testing and certification for regulatory compliance.
- Regulatory Authorities: Provides a recognized method for market surveillance, ensuring that fertilizer products meet environmental and agronomic regulations within the EU and associated member countries.
- Agricultural Stakeholders: Ensures transparency in labeling and declaration of phosphorus content, contributing to better nutrient management practices and sustainable crop production.
By employing this standard, stakeholders can achieve:
- Consistency in the measurement of phosphorus solubility across products and batches
- Comparability of test results required for product registration and trade
- Compliance with EU regulatory requirements for fertilizers
Related Standards
For a complete and robust analytical framework, the following related documents are referenced and recommended:
- CEN/TS 17774: Specifies the determination of specific elements, including phosphorus, by ICP-AES after extraction by water for organic and organo-mineral fertilizers.
- EN 1482 (all parts): Establishes principles for sampling and sample preparation of fertilizers and liming materials, essential for ensuring representative analytical results.
Both documents, alongside CEN/TS 17779:2022, support a comprehensive approach to fertilizer analysis, fostering high standards in fertilizer quality, safety, and traceability.
