Coating powders - Part 10: Determination of deposition efficiency (ISO 8130-10:2021)
This document specifies a method for determining the mass fraction in per cent (%) of a sprayed coating powder which is deposited on a test item under known spray gun and environmental conditions.
The method is applicable to powders applied by corona or tribo charging and can be used to compare the deposition efficiency of different powders with the same or different gun with the same powder.
This method is only used for comparison when powders or guns are evaluated consecutively, as the influence of the environment and the equipment can vary significantly with time and location.

Overview
EN ISO 8130-10:2021 outlines a standard method for the determination of deposition efficiency in sprayed coating powders. Developed by CEN and ISO as part of the ISO 8130 series, this standard specifies procedures for measuring the mass fraction (percentage) of a coating powder that is successfully deposited onto a test item, under defined environmental and spray gun conditions. It applies to powders applied using either corona or tribo charging methods and enables reliable efficiency comparison between different powders or spray guns, provided tests are conducted consecutively and under similar conditions.
Deposition efficiency is a critical parameter for powder coating processes, influencing material costs, coating quality, environmental impact, and production efficiency. Adhering to this standardized method helps ensure consistent, repeatable, and comparable results across different laboratories and manufacturing sites.
Key Topics
- Deposition Efficiency: Proportion of powder mass deposited versus sprayed, expressed as a percentage.
- Test Conditions: Control and documentation of environment (temperature, humidity), spray gun type (corona or tribo), and operational settings.
- Comparative Analysis: Method allows for comparison when powders or guns are evaluated consecutively with the same environmental and equipment setup.
- Test Procedure: Includes sample preparation, use of specified equipment, and stepwise instructions for spraying and measurement.
- Reporting Requirements: Thorough documentation of test conditions, powder characteristics, equipment parameters, and deviations is mandatory for traceability and result validation.
- Applicability Limitations: Results are only comparable under strictly controlled, repeatable circumstances due to environmental and equipment variability.
Applications
EN ISO 8130-10:2021 is essential for organizations involved in the manufacturing, application, and quality control of powder coatings, such as:
- Coating Powder Manufacturers: To compare and optimize product deposition rates, reduce waste, and ensure product performance.
- Industrial Coat Shops: For equipment selection, process setup, and quality assurance of powder spraying operations.
- Research and Development: To evaluate prototype powders and application equipment within controlled testing environments.
- Third-party Testing Laboratories: To standardize measurement protocols for client benchmarking and certification programs.
- Process Optimization: Identifying the most efficient combinations of powders and guns to maximize material usage and minimize overspray, reducing environmental impact and cost.

committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
