Overview
EN 14976:2005 - Textiles - Mattress Ticking - Specifications and Test Methods is a European Standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization). This standard outlines the essential properties, test methods (excluding flammability), and minimum requirements for mattress ticking fabrics. Mattress ticking refers to woven, nonwoven, or knitted fabrics used as the primary covering for mattresses, divans, and bed bases designed for both residential and public/contract markets. By following EN 14976:2005, manufacturers, suppliers, and testing organizations can ensure that mattress covers meet quality and performance expectations across Europe.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: Applicable to mattress coverings for domestic and commercial environments, including public sector facilities and hotels.
- Material Types: Covers woven, knitted, and nonwoven fabrics for mattress covers.
- Physical Properties: Specifies requirements for width, length, mass per unit area, tensile strength, tear resistance, seam slippage, and bursting strength.
- Color Fastness: Evaluates how fabric withstands wet and dry rubbing, perspiration (acid and alkaline), washing, and exposure to artificial light.
- Dimensional Stability: Addresses changes after washing and drying, crucial for washable fabrics.
- Manufacturer Obligations: Details on marking, labeling, and packaging requirements, including identification, fiber composition, care instructions, and roll information.
- Factory Control Alternatives: Provides guidance on in-factory verification of roll length and fabric flexing/bias.
- Safety Note: Excludes flammability - compliance with local fire regulations is required.
Applications
EN 14976:2005 is utilized by:
- Mattress Manufacturers: To specify and ensure the quality of ticking fabrics used in product lines for residential and contract use such as hotels, hostels, and hospitals.
- Textile Suppliers: To produce and supply compliant woven, nonwoven, or knitted materials for the bedding industry.
- Testing Laboratories: For conformity assessment and performance evaluation of mattress tickings against specific criteria including:
- Mass per unit area
- Strength (tensile, tearing, bursting)
- Color fastness under various conditions
- Dimensional stability for washable tickings
- Procurement and Retailers: To specify performance-based requirements when sourcing mattress materials for assurance of durability, comfort, and regulatory compliance.
- Quality Assurance and Control: Factory production control procedures and assessment protocols are detailed for manufacturers.
Mattress ticking fabrics conforming to this standard ensure reliable performance, consistency, and suitability for heavy commercial use, reducing product failures and complaints.
Related Standards
Fabrics and their performance are also governed by several related standards, many of which are referenced in EN 14976:2005 for specific measurement or testing methods, including:
- EN 1773: Determination of fabric width and length
- EN 12127: Determination of mass per unit area for textiles
- EN 25077 / EN ISO 6330: Dimensional change after washing/drying
- EN ISO 105-B02 / C08 / E04 / X12: Various color fastness tests (light, laundering, rubbing, perspiration)
- EN ISO 9073-4 / EN ISO 13937-2: Tear resistance tests
- EN ISO 13934-1: Tensile strength testing
- EN ISO 13936-2: Slippage resistance at seams
- EN ISO 13938-1: Bursting strength for nonwoven and knitted fabrics
Additionally, local regulations may impose further requirements, particularly concerning flammability, underscoring the need for compliance with both EN 14976 and national legislation.
By adhering to EN 14976:2005, organizations can assure product quality, consumer safety, and market eligibility for mattress ticking textiles throughout Europe, supporting confidence in the home textiles industry and contract bedding markets.
